"THANKS" that contribution Nathan Sounds "a little bit" like some of our current L-1011 panel multi-mode AP sophistication .... which wouldn't surprise me at all really considering the DC-10 and L-1011 both represwent technolgy from a similar era .... although I think the L-1011 might have been "a little more sophisticated" in respect of some of its AP functions. This YouTube video here, shows quite a bit of the autopilot being used in V/S mode. He levels of at 11,100 feet to reduce speed by centring the V/S wheel. I hope it helps, Cheers, Nathan youtu.be/e-vs2maG1ac

Hi George, I'm sorry I'm late to the party here.I'm pretty well versed on tjhe 10s autopilot, known in Mcdonnell Douglas speak as the flight guidance system.I'm a 26 year AA mechanic and ex NWA as well with much real world 10 experience 1. to know what mode the FGS or flight director is in, you have to look at the FMA. the switches don't light up to display modes. 2.the vertical speed wheel matches the true acft. vertical speed through the central air data computer. if the bird is not level at engagement the FGS enters vertical speed mode.the mechanism is a servo moter which will recognize movement. 3. when the vert. speed wheel is moved to level it will hold altitude.IAS or Mach pitch modes will override. 4.the altitude select knob works as follows. turning causes fine adjustments ie. hundreds of feet.Pushing in and turning causes larger adjustments ie. thousands of feet.pulling the knob arms the altitude in the select for capture in a pitch mode VS, IAS, Mach.pushing does not select alt. hold. Alt hold is selected on the vert. speed wheel. I hope this is helpful and not too late. Stan

I think we're OK now .... but .... we'll scan the information contained within your link anyway. There's no disadavantage in us having an abundance of reference material of course Mark C AKL/NZ

Yes, of course. I understand. I just wanted to pitch in my two cents. By the looks of George Carty's screenshots, I'm sure this DC-10 panel is gonna be legendary. can't wait to show it off to the other pilots from my VA.
