AIRBUS may be first to actually produce a "full-fledged" double deck type concept for the airways, but, they are by no means first too have considered it.
McDONNELL-DOUGLAS also considered the double deck concept during very early D-918 and D-956-13 design studies which eventually evolved into the DC10.
And you should see what DOUGLAS had in mind for the DC8 too. The original "DC8-70's" concept (a completly different aircraft from todays -70's series aircraft) of the mid 1960's was basicly an outgrowth of the existing -60' series aircraft but with even higher operating weights and greater power. Then there was their "DC8-80's" concept a little later too. This featured a further fuselage stretch .... beyond that of the -63 .... a widened upper lobe for 8 abreast seating, and P&W JT9 series turbofan engines. Again these studies culminated with the DC10.
Defintely the aviation industry is littered with design ideas which "never took-off" .... if you'll excuse the pun ;D
