"THESE" .... are .... indeed .... "2 GREAT cLASSICS" (the B707 in particular) .... both by virtue of their rarety This particular B707 .... "N793SA" .... was one of 13 B707-138's built for Australias QANTAS AIRWAYS .... and delivered to the airline during 1959 (as a JT3C-6 turbojet powered aircraft with the originmal short tail fin and no ventral fin) as part of its first batch of 6 of these aircraft .... and which was converted to JT3D-3B fanjet power and modified during 1961 ..... when it was redesignated as a "B707-138B". It was also one of 2 such aircraft leased by STANDARD AIRWAYS from 1967. The B707-138/B was a short fuselage and longer ranging version of the B707-120/B and which was tailored, by BOEING, specifically for QANTAS AIRWAYS (when DOUGLAS refused to compromise it's original DC8 specification to suit the airlines requirements) long range trans-Pacific routes to the USA and UK from both Sydney and Melbourne Australia. N793SA .... was first delivered to QANTAS as VH-EBE "City Of Perth" on August 24th 1959. It was modified to B707-120B specificatios during November 1961 and served the airline until May 15th 1968 when it was sold to INTERNATIONAL AERODYNE and leased to STANDARD AIRWAYS (N793SA) until July 1969 .... then leased to PACIFIC WESTERN AIRLINES (CF-PWW)until July 20th 1969 .... then leased to ALASKA AIRLINES from May 1st 1971 until September 30th 1971 .... then leased to BAHAMAS WORLD AIRLINES (VP-BDE) from November 18th 1971. It was next sold to NATIONAL AIRCRAFT LEASING (N793NA) on August 8th 1974 and leased to AEROAMERICA from October 1975 .... and then sub leased to EGYPTAIR from February 1976 until August 1977. It was then sold to TAG AVIATION during April 1978 .... then onsold to AVIATION TECHNICAL SUPPORT during April 1983 .... and then onsold to BOEING MILITARY AIRPLANE COMPANY on April 24th 1983, withdrawn from use, and then stored at Davis Montham AFB, Tucson, Arizona, where it was broken up and used for spares recovery in aid of the USAF KC135-E program. STANDARD AIRLINES was a San Diego based charter/supplemental air carrier which commenced operations on July 17th 1946 .... as STANDARD AIR CARGO .... and which was renamed STANDARD AIRWAYS during 1953 when it began low-fare and limited frequency PAX services to Burbank, Long Beach, and Oakland California .... and further afield .... later including international services to Hawaii. The airline progressed from DC3's to DC4's and then L1049-G CONSTELLATIONs through the late 1940's and 1950's .... and joined the jet set during 1966 when its it acquired 2 DC9-15's .... followed later by 2 leased B707-138B's from 1967. The airline ceased operations on September 24th 1969. Mark C AKL/NZ
