...the Air Canada DC-8 operations manual circa 1969-1970 makes reference to the fact that their DC-8-63 models had autothrottle.
So at least some of the DC-8-60 series must have left the factory equipped with them.
I understand HJG's goal of being as historically accurate as possible, and it's what makes these jets so great, but if authrottle was available on some later models, then I think it wouldn't be a bad thing to have on the appropriate panel.
Isn't that why there are different DC-8 and 707 panels, because their equipment and layout changed over time? Well then a late model DC-8-60 panel with an autothrottle-equipped autopilot wouldn't be a bad thing.....
I remember a recent thread where there was discussion of adding TCAS to some DC-8 panels, or at least trying to make it an option. If we can discuss that as a possibility, then why not autothrottle?
Those who don't want to use autothrottle can always just leave it turned off....
Regards,
Jim

Autothrottle on any DC8 would be extremly rare. Certainly none of our -52's, or any of the other -60's, and -70's series that came through here were ever so equipped. Need "JOHN D" .... for a definitive overview on this. Hopefully he'll stop by later I doubt we'll be adjusting our DC8 panels beyond their present configuration. I'm aware however some folk have edited things like modern GPS and even AT into there panels though .... and that's fine .... but we won't be going there Regarding the B707 panels: I do clearly recall that discussion (and I think you were one of those who got to sample a preliminary release of George's panel posted here some weeks ago .... if I remember correctly). Whatever instrumentation finally is featured on the "officially released" versions of those panels (very very soon) is really up to George. Being appreciative of his efforts on our behalf we've tried not to influence him too much. I can say definitively there's "NO AUTOTHROTTLE" .... and I honestly can't remember if TCAS has been included on the forthcomming B707-320B/C panel versions or not. There's some significant instrument variation between the 3 principal panels. There's also 7 variations of panel when one considers in each case engine instruments have been callibrated to reflect the performances of various turbojet and fanjet engines applied to different B707/720 series aircraft Mark C AKL/NZ

Even though some of the aircraft had autothrottles installed, it was very quickly proved that it didn't really work. As I understand it, the system was mainly used in coupled approaches. All of our aircraft at ATI at some point ad them installed, but have been deactivated for at least 30 years. In fact we only do coupled approaches on an occasional basis, as it doesn't work all that well. It's usually a suprise that it works at all. John

We've got one on line flying in the pacific, and the other is finished but parked in the desert for now. ATI is going through some changes right now, with a new owner who seems hell bent to ruin it. I won't go into details, but we have been told that the 72 that is parked is stored due to the unavailability of spare cfm-56 engines. We think it's a ploy as we the pilots are in the middle of contract negotiations.

Auto throttle in a DC-8??? Only if the flight engineer is an old bald-headed German guy named Otto. Dee

Assuming those pilot/company negotiations proceed OK .... then maybe we could well see you down here sometime in the future John If you do make it down there'll be a very big thick, juicy, tender NZ steak and some of the best beer in the world waiting here for you We aviation photographers could do with a DC8 down here. We haven't had one here at NZAA since early 1999 (American Intl -63F N811CK). We're getting sick'n'tired of Airbus's & Boeing's filling our lenses all the time Thanks for contributing to the DC8 AT systems thing too BTW Mark C AKL/NZ
