I am not quite sure if this is the proper place to post this question.
However, I was just curious if any HJG pilots are using a wide screen monitor ( 19" + ) for FS9 and would appreciate some comments as to whether this type of monitor is suitable fo FS usage.

i don't use a widescreen monitor, but i do have a 21" monitor which works wonders. second system has a 17" monitor only. imho,you'd be better off with 2 regular TFT screens as opposed to one widescreen.

I don't think the size makes much difference..more so the resolution you choose to run at.
The higher the resolution the more there is to lay down and I would think that impacts significantly on frame rates.

My desktop has a regular monitor but when I'm working on the road I run FS9 on my laptop with a widescreen. It works ok but I do have to drag the panel window to reshape it so that the gauges are round again. When I first open FS the gauges are oval because of the different screen proportions. All I do is drag the panel up and move the mouse pointer to the bottom of the panel until I see the double arrow and then drag the bottom lower to re-proportion the panel so that the gauges look normal again.

I run a "19 inch screen. Typically I set aa resolution of 1024 X 768 .... for performance reasons, but, more recently when doing screen shots for articles (only) I've begun to run in 1280 X 1024 .... for image quality.
I've found (on some PC's/monitors more than others) greater than 1280 X 1024 resolution whilst looking impressive will often distort how the aircraft looks on screen an within FS perspective-wise.
I've never run Wide Screen monitors to compare though.

I had an old 23" HP office monitor that bit the dust a while ago, I now use a 32" LCD LG monitor which I set at 1360 x 768 which has good performance locked at 20 FPS.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I posted this question because for some time now I have intended to purchase a larger screen monitor. Presently I have a 19" flat screen.
Regarding the larger wide screen monitors, I just was not certain what the results would be and the relationship between the different aspect ratio of the wider screen and the various combinations of resolution.
timb mentioned that some adjustments were required to the panel as a result of distortions and stretching, which I understand being the result of the different aspect ratio.
Benoit, you mentioned getting good results on your 32" LCD. Is your monitor a wide screen and are you having to make adjustments to properly display the instrument panel?
Your continued help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers: Herman

Herman, it is widescreen, all the panels I've used so far, display full screen without having to make any adjustments when set at 1360 x 768 x 32. All instrumentation and gauges are very sharp and crisp.
Specs: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.40GHz 2.0GB RAM Radeon X550 with DVI-out graphics card Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum Altec Lansing 4.1 Surround system

Hello Benoit;
Thank you for your reply. It sounds like you are getting good results with your wide screen system, so I will be looking into investing in a widescreen monitor soon.
Those HGJ jetliners must look really impressive and with the size of your monitor it must feel almost like sitting in the flight deck of the real thing.

I just went for a 20" 1600x1200 4:3 non-wide screen and am very happy with it.
I don't think there is much point in the wide-screen format for computer screens.
Also keep in mind that a 20" 16:10 screen is actually smaller than a 20" 4:3 screen.

Hello Herman,
I just saw this thread this morning so perhaps this is old news. (smile)
I upgraded my entire computer system this past December and for the first time went with a flat wide screen monitor. (27" Sony running 1900X1280) I must say that I'm sold on the wide screen as everything is extremely crisp to this old tired eyes.

Hello Steve;
I am happy to hear that you are pleased with your system and the wide screen monitor.
Several months ago I purchased a 32" LCD widescreen monitor. With the aspect ratio set on widescreen I had to experiment a bit with FS9 resolutions in order to get the most realistic aircraft and panel images. This happened with a FS9 resolution of 1280x 768, although there is a very slight, but hardly noticeable stretching of the round panel gauges.( a compromise that made it well worth having the larger monitor ) My frame rates were not affected at all. I suppose that there are other resolution options that may be even better?
Having the larger monitor is making the Flight Sim experience even more enjoyable, if that is possible.
Cheers; Herman
