A revised ENVMAP file has been available for FS2004 for quite some time now .... I was put on to it by our Phil BEHREND aka "ALDO_REGOZANI".
This revised ENVMAP file has the effect of enhancing both reflective and natural metal textures in particular.
It's available on AVSIM as the following named file ....
resenvmaptex
When myself & Camilo first used thisrevised ENVMAP file in FS2004 about 1 year ago, we noticed quite a significant improvement in the way most natural metal aircraft textures were displayed within FS.
Folk not already using this texture might like to consider trying it .... but .... remember to back up you original ENVMAP texture before installing the new one of course .... just in case you don't like it.
This revised ENVMAP texture may make Ben's already stunning natural metal look even more stunning ....

Sorry to sound like a downer but as a painter who spends hours trying to get an effect with FS set up as it is changing the ENVMAP is bad news.
Moving goal posts does not help.

"NO PROBLEM" Garry .... but .... really ! I'm actually very impressed by what we saw .... to the extent hat I've been using it ever since .... because I like the overall effect it produced. Different graphics cards will make a difference of course .... in as much as different repaints/textures may result in different results too. Again .... no harm in folks trying this other "ENVMAP" option .... but .... for God sake back-up/save your original ENVMAP file to a temporary folder rather than overwriting it with this other option or deleting it completly. If folk don't like then they can just restore the original ! Mark C AKL/NZ

You're missing the point Ben
I'm not saying it's not better I am saying I am balancing to the Sim figures and then someone changes it
I have already seen my own model being ruined by this updated file and having a totally unrealistic finsh because it is not set up for that but for the sim settings as they are.
That is my only point

I have already seen my own model being ruined by this updated file You made a model??? This is not the only freeware envmap out there. There is at least 10 freeware examples available let alone the ones that come in payware flight environment and sky addon packages, unless you are dead certain that it was this file. Ben

When I first tried the abovementioned ENVMAP AVSIM FILE NAME: resenvmaptex.zipAUTHOR: Bart DYLKIEWICZIt was with Rick PIPER's VISCOUNT models supported by Garry's textures. I also checked it out with the FS DEZIGN L749 CONSTELLATION too. Then with "some" of our own HJG stuff as well at the time. This particular ENVMAP file was recommended to me by our own Phil BEHREND aka "ALDO REGOZANI" I noticed significant improvement in the way most natural metal textures appeared .... particularly on the VISCOUNT and the CONNIE .... and a number of our own HJG repaints for B707/720, CV880/990 & DC8. It was these results that convinced me to employ this replacement ENVMAP permanently .... which I've been doing now for more than a year. Myself & Benoit are doing sounds for Garry's model (I'm not telling what it is until he's ready to announce it), and these are being developed on the same FS2004 installation which also uses this replacement ENVMAP .... so .... I've had plenty of opportunity to assess how Garry's model/textures might be influenced by this file. From what I've seen so far everything looks "GOOD". I think the most important facts here are as follows .... There's more than 1 replacement ENVMAP file available for FS .... as Ben correctly states.
Different ENVMAP files will obviously produce different results .... but .... I'll only vouch for the 1 particular file mentioned above and not any of the other variations of it !
Different graphics cards "ARE" going to produce different results .... of course !
Textures by different authors "WILL" also produce different results of course too .... some better than others maybe !
Some folks will like the results .... whilst others may not .... buy HEY .... that's human nature and beauty's always in the eye of the beholder !What I'm seeing on our own system "here" and with what I have installed, I think the results are "NICE". I wouldn't say so if I were not first content .... and I'm "EXTREMLY SELECTIVE" too. But .... that's just my opinion/experience ! Mark C AKL/NZ

Get over to CBFS and take a look at the pre-views of Garry's stunning Bristol Frieghter. Re the envomap or whatever. I agree that an enhanced one can mess up textures that was set up for default FS bmp the only cure is to get the painter to create new alpha channels for each envomap which is a pain and a non starter.

Please provide both the website name .... and actual file time too.
