Has anyone noticed that the DC-8 autopilot can hold altitude, but not pitch? If you try and set vertical speed mode to climb at a constant rate, it descends, not climbs.
Other than that, a stunning piece of work. Thanks George!
Cheers!

Are you talking about IAS HLD Luke ?
If so .... I can't check it in FSX .... and I never use it in FS2004 anyway .... only because it's apparently seldom if ever used on the real aircraft.
An observation for Dan to confirm .... and George to fix if necessary .... me thinks !
OH .... just one other thing you could try ....
Do you have FSUIPC installed ?
Either a fully licensed version .... or .... the basic unlicensed version with at least "MINIMUM DEFAULTS" set.
I seem to recall briefly experiencing a minor AP issue with the last DC-8 gauges update ("MARCH 2007" .... not this one), but, that was completly resolved when I installed FSUIPC .... with "MINIMUM DEFAULTS" set.
Another thing that's just crossed my mind too ....
Even if you already have FSUIPC installed, it might pay to uninstall/reinstall it again .... so it recognises the new DC-8.GAU .... and see if that fixes your AP problem.
Also .... when uninstalling/reinstalling FSUIPC don't forget to shutdown and restat FS "once" between each of these 2 phases .... so FS can recognise changes have taken place.
Try all this and see how you get along !

Are you talking about IAS HLD Luke ? No, vertical speed mode - the default. In FS2004, when you turn on the auto pilot I believe it holds the vertical speed at the time of autopilot engagement. Clicking in the middle of the V/S wheel will cause it to hold altitude. In FSX, only the latter feature works. If you are holding altitude, and then you adjust the wheel upwards, the aircraft will eventually go into a nice dive. I haven't tried IAS hold much, but when I did it didn't seem to do much. The previous version's IAS hold did work rather nicely in FS9. It did give me a good opportunity to test out my hand flying skills, though. www.deltava.org/pirep.do?id=0x3c72bCheers! Luke

Unfortunately I can't run an FSX check on this.
Since my first posting on this particular thread I've done 2 quick climb tests .... in AP controlled flight mode .... and using both VERT SPD, and IAS climb modes indivdually, then disengaging/re-engasging the AP and flicking between both modes once again.
Everything seems to work as fine as it should within FS2004.
I also uinstalled/reinstalled FSUIPC (I'm still using V3.71 which is probably well superseded by now) .... and precisely as described above .... just to confirm performance observations.
So far as I'm aware (and I could be wrong in this assumption), but, FSX performance of these aircraft and panels should mirror that of FS2004.
In fact the only difference between both AIRCRAFT.CFG version is the way in in which "SMOKE" data is written, but, nothing else is different so far as I'm aware.
Dan might like to run an FSX check on this later .... and report accordingly !

I have installed the DC8-50 and am experiencing the same AP pitch hold symptoms that Luke has described. I am using FSX/SP2 and the only other discrepancy I have noticed is the engine smoke effect is not properly aligned with the engines.
Also, are the 2D cockpit interior views supposed to be visible in FSX? Mine are not at present.
Thanks to HJG crew for porting/tweaking these old favorites to FSX.

Yes I 2 can confirm AP pitch hold doesn't work in FSX
And does any one know how to make the cockpit windows see through and not blacked out

OK .... AP pitch issues with the DC-8's in FSX have now been noted. Realistically guys .... it's probably going to be sometime in the New Year before we can do anything about this. I don't believe we can do any more between now and this side of January 2008 .... SORRY ! Best temporary solution until the matter this investigated further and resolved is to use manual trim when climbing or descending too altitude. Avoid usng IAS HLD and VERT SPD modes for the moment. "SCOTTY" .... that's a completly new one to me ! What video card and drivers are you using ? Are you using FULL SCREEN or STANDARD VIEWING in FS ? I suspect your particular problem may possibly be video card/driver related .... because nobody else has yet reported this. Mark C AKL/NZ

Hi Mark
I use a Radeon 9550 with Omega 3.8.421 Drivers, problem is the same for full screen & windowed mode. Dc-8-50 Air New Zealand I'm using, no problem in FS9 but in FSX flight deck windows & some textures i.e front air vents on fuselage & vent below engine intake, just black. I have had problems with other aircraft, mainly ones made for previous FS versions, but can usually correct the problem.
Thanks Scotty
PS I'll try & post a pic of my problem

Folks .... leading up to investigating this alledged AP related pitch issue.
I need to ask as follows ....
1. Is there is any FSX user out there whom is "NOT" experiencing any pitch related problems when using either of the AP controlled climb/descend modes.
2. Has anyone yet tried the solution I suggsted above .... in relation to FSUIPC .... I'm not implying this will resolve the issue, but, need to know if it has any positive effect or not.
Anyone care to comment .... particularly in relation to # 1 above .... FSX users "ONLY" please !
May I just stress, in case anyone is uncertain, this problem does not exist within FS2004 .... and I can confirm this observation personally on the basis of my own retesting last evening.

I haven't tried the DC-8 models in FSX yet, but will attempt to do so soon. To be honest there have been pitch issues with other FS9 aircraft in FSX, most likely something in the flight model. I'll report my results when I can.
As for the windows being black, this is also something I've seen with other FS9 or earlier aircraft models in FSX. I have a sneaking suspicion it's the way the textures and surfaces are handled, since FSX uses .dds (Direct Draw Surface) as the native texture format.
**EDIT** Okay, the issue with the autopilot is confirmed on my FSX (SP2). Using V-Speed mode initiates a dive whether positive or negative rates are commanded. Pitch hold seemed to work, maintaining pitch at the time the mode was activated. I didn't try IAS mode so I can't speak to that.

Thanks for that valuable feedback "TARASDAD".
Please check IAS HLD mode if you don't mind .... and report back.
About the blackened views: So far as I'm aware it's only "SCOTTY" reporting that (so far), so, I'm more inclined to guess that may be a video card based issue raher than a more general one .... but .... we'll see of course !

O.K finally able to up load a pic of my problem, windows, intakes below cockpit, landing lights and parts of the gear struts have the problem I don't have this problem with FS9. Always throught to was because Planes were only FS9 compatiable. AP works O.K on FS9, does pitch up and down a little on the IAS hold, but settles down to maintain IAS hold. Scotty

I use these birds in FS9 also .... and that NZ bird in particular. IAS hold should be used above 300KTS and with plenty of altitude to spare .... as described per my DC-8 PANELS INSTALLATION & HANDLING NOTES (see "ABOUT HJG AIRCRAFT" forum page). Before engaging it you should have your acceleration rate completly under control .... to a constant speed value .... or .... it will begin to pitch the aircraft somewhat as the AP endeavours to find the best attitude at which to maintain the speed achieved at the time it was first selected. If this rule is observed then transition to IAS hold from either VERT SPD mode or manually flight is superbly smooth. During stable IAS HLD, if power is increased .... the AP will then increase the aircrafts pitch attitide to try and maintain speed .... and if thottles are retarded it will reduce pitch attitde to try and maintain whatever speed was selected. If I'm not mistaken IAS HLD is seldom if ever used on DC-8's in the real world .... I understand a lot of aircraft may not even feature it. I prefer letting our John DETRICK discuss more about that .... if he cares to. About the blackened flightdeck windows, lights, and intakes etc .... with regard to the flightdeck windshield I now see precisely what you're referring to. Previously I thought you were meaning blackened outside window views from panel to FS world environment. This .... unfortunately .... may be a consequence of these models vintage and their use within FSX If that's the case then we're stuck with it .... because there won't likely be any FSX model/texture updates by us for the DC-8's .... I'm sorry to have to say. Remember .... these are principally FS2004 models and textures, with revised FDE which I understood would work fine in FSX. It's beginning to seem like everything looks and works fine within FSX (with the exception of this AP VERT SPD issue) so long as you don't go outside .... maybe ! Of course I'm only guessing ! Folks .... whom have experienced and reported this FSX related AP problem with the DC-8 panels.
We are looking at this issue. We are making progress. We are about to start a new phase of retesting .... and should (all going well) be able to offer you a definitive solution soon.
Just a reminder .... THIS ISSUE DOES NOT EXIST I FS2004.
"LUKE" .... please contact me per PM !
Thanks !
