I have not been able to get the KC-135R to appear in FSX. I faithfully downloaded the base package and textures, etc. I think the problem is there is not a "aircraft_fsx.cfg" file in the base package (HSG_Boeing_KC-135R_v5). Has this aircraft been updated for FSX? Is there another base package with the correct FSX cfg?

I think the problem might be that you haven't installed your panel correct. This will let FSX to think that you have an AI-plane....
Please be very thorough and read the guidelines in "one way to install 707's in FSX"
If it still doesn't solve your problem then please come back.

Well... I certainly do have a problem with the panel (it is causing FSX to crash). I'll go back and reinstall. I got the KC-135R to appear by using the KC-135A FSX CFG file... not certain that gives me the proper performance, etc., but at least it appears. (She's sluggish.) I also went back to using the default B747_400 panel (not that I want to... but one problem at a time). Please note: there is no "aircraft_fsx.cfg" file packed in the base model file "HJG_Boeing_KC-135R_v5.zip" vs the instructions.
BTW: What's really got my juices flowing about this is I'm getting an orientation ride in one in coming months.

No there isn't an aircraft_fsx.cfg, as there is no need for it. You should be perfectly able to use the aircraft.cfg provided, and alias the panel to the B707-700 panel. There is even a special soundpack for her as well.... If you follow my advice in the guidance (which I just did) there should be no problems for you... I hope you'll succeed, and also that you'll have a pleasant flight when the day arrives ;-) Here you go, nicely parked at Thule AB:

The FSX named AIRCRAFT.CFG files only changes how smoke effects display for those aircraft requiring these effects.
The CFM powered aircraft are "virtually" smokeless .... hence these do not feature smoke effects .... which is why no FSX specific CFG file is provided for these particular aircraft.
KC135-A and KC135-R performances are completly different.
The "A" is powered by early water injected turbojet engines of something in the vicinity of 11-13,000lbs/st each .... whilst the "R" is powered by big modern turbofans rated at something in the vicinity of 20-23,000lbs/st each.
The performance of fanjet powered aircraft is somewhere between the two.
George CARTY has gone to great lenghths to ensure the best possible flight modelling for each of our aircraft types for us .... so .... you should experience quite a bit of prformance variation between different models.

No joy. I went back and used the .cfg file provided with the HJG Boeing KC-135R v5 file. I also faithfully put the B707-700 panel into the FSFSCONV subfolder in FSX as advised. Core files also downloaded and filed into FS Gauges as instructed. The KC-135R is not showing in the menu... and as I have designated the panel in the KC-135A (also loaded) to the FSFSCONV\panel.b707-700 folder it causes FSX to crash. I can get the KC-135A to display and run when alised to a b747_400 panel.
Next suggestion?

Either your alias is wrong or your path definition is wrong... At which level do you have you FSFSCONV folder? I would suggest you have it directly under the SimObject-level (at the same level as you aircraft) If you prefer to have your FSFSCONV folder directly under the main FSX folder, then you should just add FSX\ in front of the path you have now in your alias.... (this is actually basic DOS notation of folder-levels... but who remember DOS nowadays )

The panel cfg in my HJG Boeing KC-135R v5 aircraft folder reads: [fltsim] alias=fsfsconv\panel.b707-700
The FSFSCONV folder is under SimObjects\Airplanes (as instructed). File folder is "Panel.b707-700"
KC-135R Aircraft still not shown on the FSX aircraft selection menu. How do I do a screen capture of my Windows Explorer files to illustrate what I've got?
(I do remember DOS... even found a floppy the other day!)

Well.. progress (I guess). I've found it in the menu. When I hit "Fly Now" I get a crash and the dreaded "Fatal Error" message. More MS message details: "Problem signature: Problem Event Name: BEX Application Name: fsx.exe Application Version: 10.0.61355.0 Application Timestamp: 4643ee0a Fault Module Name: unknown Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0 Fault Module Timestamp: 00000000 Exception Offset: 19b05bd5 Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Data: 00000008 OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033"
There's something funky in panel land...

The mystery deepens... the B707-700 works with the KC-135A aircraft (aliased as above). But causes FSX to crash (as described) for the KC-135R.
Could this have anything to with and/or should I be running a current version of FSUIPC?

I very much doubt it ! Although FSUIPC can and does benefit many aspects of FS(including panels and gauges) and we have indeed just been discussing this module elsewhere on the forum, it's main advantage to our B707 panels is that it "MUST" be installed (even in unlicensed form) in order for the weather radar set to function. To work this weather radar set requires any version of FSUIPC from V3.50. You should be able to download the latest FSUIPC version "FREE" from here .... www.schiratti.com/dowson.htmlTo benefit FS fully requires paying Pete DOWSON a license .... to onbtain the key to unlock other normally inaccessable FSUIPC pages .... but I also hasted to add .... there is a selectable "NORMAL/MINIMUM DEFAULTS" option available with any downloaded FSUIPC version which does have benefits too. With regard to the B707-700 panel. There have been a few (and I mean "VERY FEW") recorded instances of folk experiencing FS crashes when selecting this panel .... including 1 of our own team members. The vast majority of folk, including myself, appear not to be having any problems at all. With the huge variation evident among PC's today it may be some internal "VARIABLE" that's causing the problem you and those few others are experiencing. I don't want to sound like I'm dismising your problem .... because I'm not by any means. I'm just "suggesting" all the above as a "POSSIBILITY" to be considered. Dan may have suggestions for you to follow, so, I'll leave you in his very capable hands. Mark C AKL/NZ

... How do I do a screen capture of my Windows Explorer files to illustrate what I've got?... Be sure to include "HJG-FSX-Support:" in the Subject field (with out the quotes) Please include a copy of your aircraft.cfg and your panel.cfg (the renamed panel_fsx.cfg) along with as many illustrative screenshots you can get. A small readme.txt wouldn't hurt either. Normally I hold my weekends sacred, so don't expect anything until Monday :-)

Mark and Dan: First, thanks for your continuing advise and assistance.
Dan, I'll be sending you an email with the screen captures.
Mark, I'll update my FSUIPC just, well, because...
So you both know where things stand at this point: 1. The KC-135A model aircraft appears in the menu. I can get it to run ONLY if I first load another aircraft, then switch it out with the KC-135A. Otherwise, FSX crashes (again if upon initial load from the start-up Free Flight screen). I have aliased the B707-700 panel. I have no such problems when it is aliased to the MS B747_400 panel. 2. The KC-135R also shows in the menu but has somehow magically attached itself to another freeware thumbnail aircraft... the title appears correctly but it is attached to the graphical thumbnail of another aircraft. (Weird!) Regardless, FSX crashes every time I select it when using the HJG B707-700 panel.
I am also next going in to remove the other freeware aircraft to (hopefully) eliminate the conflict just to see what happens.
I have not experienced these same problems with any other freeware or payware aircraft. But, doggone it, it's a challenge!
For what it's worth, I am running FSX Deluxe with SP1 installed. OS is Vista Ultimate and I have plenty of horsepower with a new H-P Intel Quad Core (2.4 Ghz, 4 Ghz memory and NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS).
Respectfully, Mystified in Columbus, Ohio

Please download SP2 which is freely available from fsinsider.com.
Regarding Vista...well that's unfortunately something I cannot comment on (yet) as I run XP. But I know that there are some strict security issues with Vista....
Reg. the thumbnail.... well go to the texture folder of the aircraft and delete the thumbnail.jpg that should revert you to the standard icon. There is an excellent freeware program called autothumbnail which will save from a lot of problems regarding thumbnails.
I will look forward to your mail. (but please don't try to mix the two aircraft together as that could easily give your troubles along the way.... A fresh reinstall of both aircraft may be required, but as this is an approximately 5 minute task that shouldn't keep you from trying.
But lets see the result when I receive your mail.
As you can see from my picture there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't be able to run either aircraft in FSX....

FSX uses FSUIPC version 4.xx (the newest one). The older 3.xx files are for FS9.
