I just downloaded the DC8-50 along with panel and sound. However when trying to make the panel work with the plane, default comes up as[fltsim]alias=747_400\panel as opposed to 737_400\panel. Following the instruction carefully it continues to tell me it can not create this path. I checked some of the other models and they all seem to default to the 747_400. What do I do?

Did you follow these instructions?: ------------------------------------------- INSTALLATION: HJG DC-8-50 SERIES PANEL
PLEASE NOTE: This particular panel is intended to be used with "HJG DC-8-50" aircraft models.
This panel is configured with gauges specially calibrated for P&W JT3D-3B and P&W JT3D-1 series fanjet performance in conjunction with revised DC-8-50 FDE data.
This panel is for FS2004 and FSX. It is not compatible with FS2002.
Panel installation is very easy but please read the following instructions carefully. This is our recommended installation procedure :-
1. This folder contains a sub folder named "panel.DC8-50".
2. Simply install this entire folder "intact" inside your "FSFSCONV" folder .... you should find this folder located inside your FS2004 "AIRCRAFT" folder or FSX "SIMOBJECTS\AIRPLANES" folder. If the folder does not exist you should create it.
3. To make this panel display with your aircraft model you must open the "PANEL" folder inside your HJG DC-8-50 aircraft. It will contain a notepad named "PANEL". Open this notepad and by default it should read as follows :-
[fltsim] alias=B737_400\panel
4. Pay attention to the line "ALIAS=B737_400\PANEL". Change this line to read exactly as follows :-
alias=fsfsconv\panel.DC8-50
The completed notepad entry will then look like this :-
[fltsim] alias=fsfsconv\panel.DC8-50
And that's it !
Enjoy flying the HJG DC-8 panel series.

I have indeed followed all of the instructions to the letter. The panel folder in the in the plane when called up shows a default alias=747_400 not alias=737_400. as a result it does not recognize the path. How do I fix it?

You simply CHANGE the ...panel.cfg...file to read:
[fltsim] alias=fsfsconv\panel.DC8-50
Forget what it already says be it 747, 737 or whatever. The only thing that needs to be in the panel.cfg file is the foregoing.
Place the Folder 'panel.DC8-50' that came with the download in the 'fsfsconv' Folder within the Aircraft Folder in the Sim.
Hope this helps.
EDIT: I hope you're talking about FS9 here and not FSX. I don't know anything about FSX.

Yup, I'm running fs9 and still the dc8 eludes me. The 707's, 727 and DC 9 load up just fine but the 8 still refuses to play by the rules you have set forth. E verything loads ups just fine except the panel.

Does your setup look like this:
Within the FS9 Aircraft Folder along with numerous other Folders should be a 'fsfsconv' folder with another Folder within...'panel.DC8-50'.
Then, of course you should have: HJG_Douglas_DC-8-50_v5. And along with other folders within that should be the 'panel' Folder. The ONLY thing in that folder should be a file...'panel.cfg'.
Inside THAT folder there should only be the following:
[fltsim] alias=fsfsconv\panel.DC8-50
Is that what you've got?
Without being there and seeing what's going on, about all I can suggest at this state is to start over with a complete new download and see what happens if the above is exactly as you have it.
Let us know.

Yes that is exactly what I have, but each time I attempt to put [fltsim] alias=fsfsconv\panel.DC8-50 into the pane folder it refuses to acknowledge the path. everything else is in place.

OK.....one more idea.
In your Aircraft.cfg file (for this a/c) what is after panel= ?
There shouldn't be anything.

O.K., here's the situation. I dumped all the DC8 files (model, textures, panel, sound & effects. I downloaded everything fresh and reinstalled as per the instructions. Having put the panel folder in the fsfsfconv and going to the panel cfg file in the plane the note pad reads [fltsim]alias=b747_400\panel. Changing this to read [fltsim]alias= fsfsconv\panel.DC8-50 Notepad comes back and says: The text in theC:\program files\Microsoft Games\flight simulator9\aircraft\HJG_Douglas_DC-8-50_v5\panel\panel.cfg file has changed. Do you want to save the changes? "YES" Notepad comes back to say cannot create the C:\program files\microsoft games\flight simulator9\aircraft\HJG_Douglas_DC-8-50_v5\panel\panel.cfg file.

Well.....I don't know. Whenever I change anything in ANY *.cfg file it asks if I want to do it and I say yes, and that's all there is to it. If your path is valid in the first place, it shouldn't mattter what you do.
Guess you've got something going on that I don't know about. Maybe someone else can jump in here and assist. I've simply never experienced the problem you're having. Sorry.

Hello randams:
This problem has come up before and from what I recall it has something to do with some files being "read only". There is an application but I can't recall where you have to go to find it, and there is a box that has a check mark in it. What you need to do, is to uncheck the "read only". Also do a search in the forum.

randams, Are you using Vista by any chance? If so, it is commonplace for that operating system to not "play nice" when trying to change file content in the C:\program files folder. Something to try:
1. Copy and paste the panel.cfg file to a place other than C:\program files. I recommend creating a folder on the C drive named MyTemp (better yet, if you have another drive installed copy it there). 2. Right click the panel.cfg file in "MyTemp" and look at properties. If the attribute is set to read only, uncheck it and apply. 3. Make any changes you need to make and save the file. 4. Copy and paste the edited file back into the original directory in C:\program files.
Another option is to ensure you are running the system as administrator and/or disable UAC.
Hope this helps a bit.
Regards, Tom

"I HAVE PANEL" My sincere thanks to all of you. As per your suggestions, a right click on the panel and entering properties it was indeed set up as a read only. By clearing this box it finally accepted the new alias. Now my proud old bird can once again grace the sim skys of the world. Thank You one and all.
