Hi,
I was reading about Omega Navigation in my PanAm manual. If I understood it right, ONS wasn´t linked directly to the autopilot like the INS but served only to provide data for programing the Doppler nav system.
But looking the several pics in airliners.net and other sites, I saw lots of 707 with ONS but without Doppler. So my question is: was thre any ONS system that comanded directly the autopilot? Or the crew should do the work?
And what was the most precise system: ONS or INS?
Thanks!

You must have been looking at a real old manual. The Omega nav system operationally was used just like the Ins. In fact some aircraft had triple long range nav systems comprised of two INS's and one Omega or vice-versa. The omega differed from the INS in that it used external low frequency signals transmitted from various stations in the world to triangulate a position. As far as accuracy goes, by todays standards neither was too accurate with a positional probability of around 3 miles. But it was better than anything around at the time. I still remember the old Loran-c with the slave and master pulses. The omega could also be coupled to the autopilot just as the ins. John

It seems ONS was a sort of GPS "grandfather".
But what about the Loran? How did it work? Is there any picture of an equipped aircraft arround?
Yes the manual is kind of old. I think it´s from 1978 or so.
Well, I´m from 1972. No this manual is not old! ;D

Here's a link for everything you ever wanted to know about omegas. I may be dating myself, but I remember installing and programing the first omega systems aboard our KC-130's in the Marine Corps around 1979, our first palletized INS systems came not soon after. www.jproc.ca/hyperbolic/omega.htmlHere's the link to the Loran info site. Something very similaiar to the APN-4 was installed and operational on our KC-130's into the early 80's. www.jproc.ca/hyperbolic/loran_a.htmlFollow the menus on these pages for the index and it will give you a history of all kind of ancient electronic nav aids.
