Just bought Fly the Mad Dog 2010 Pro for FS9. I wanted at least one airliner that was as close to real world as possible, and since I really like the DC-9, narrowed down to the MD-80 options. This one looked to have all the real world systems, and allows som variation in the cockpit, i.e. analog vs. glass. Only about 2 days into it, but I like it. Challenging, for sure, but I must say that my flying the HJG DC-9 the past few weeks helped going into the MD-80 cockpit. Toughest part is learning to use the FMS and all the functions like VNAV, etc. It seems to have just about everything you'd see on a real world MD-80...I even had a hot start on my first engine start...oops!
All that said, sometimes it's nice to not worry about the FMS, VNAV, and all that and just fly the VOR's. I never did take the time to figure out the INS on the HJG 727 (or 707) and enjoy flying those birds on the airways VOR to VOR.

Which, depending on the type of routes your flying .... as well as the era you're simulating too, is how a lot of these aircraft were navaigated.
I must admit .... I too have never yet learned the INS .... and generally always navigate VOR to VOR .... if not "DEAD RECKONING" !

Indeed...and how I learned to fly in a Cessna only 20 years ago! And plenty of pilotage!
Most of the 152's I flew didn't even have DME. I was excited to fly the Mooney 201 that had an HSI!
