I managed my first medium distance flight with the Tristar yesterday and pre-programmed the INS correctly. However, in flight, when I pressed the INS button on the Autopilot nothing happened. Any suggestions please? How do you couple it so that the aircraft follows the INS waypoints? (For the record, I have managed to use it correctly in the past on the B727 and B707 so equipped.)

Mark/Chris, Thanks but my problem is simply that the INS switch on the TriStar Autopilot glareshield panel doesn't appear to work. In the absence of a specific Autopilot INS switch, the normal alternative is to switch on the Autopilot in Heading mode then, there would be a toggle switch on the MSU part of the INS to connect it - i.e. the aircraft would then again follow the programmed waypoints. However, there is no such switch. I re-iterate I'm reasonably experienced with using Delco-Carousel INS units and, that includes successfully with the HJG B727-200 and B707-420. However, I accept I may be missing some basic step somehow Cheers,

That´s quote possible .... in all due respect !
As I mentioned above .... INS is the only aspect of our panels which I´m not fully familiar with and are therefore unable to advise intelligenty .... however .... so far as I´m aware the INS we offer with these panels is precisely the same as that engineered into out B707, B727, and DC8 panel versions equipped with it .... so therefore .... it should function in precisely the same manner.
I´m not aware of any problems associated with the INS in these other panels either.
Bearing in mind my inability to assit with your query .... it might be helpful if you were to provide a step-by-step advisory (here) as to precisely how you´re trying to prohgram the INS .... and in this way someone more familiar with it´s programming might be able to advise accordingly.
Again .... and as you suggest .... it could just be a very simple but vital step which your missing during programming which is the cause of the INS not functioning.
Sorry I can´t assist more definitively than this .... BUT .... it´s an "OPEN FORUM" for intellifent advice.

Mark, Chris has no problems programming the INS, the issue is to make the AP be controlled by the INS.
You might want to use the Simufly INS instead on the L1011, as that one is more correct than ours, and actually is able to be used in a 3-way configuration which our isn't. The panel we used here is a slightly midified version of Ken Mitchells original panel, and thus there should be no issues at all to just replace our INS with the Simufly version, just a few modifications in the panel.cfg.
One of the "funny" things about the simufly version is that it so authentic that it even "wanders" out of alignment over time, so you must constantly monitor and re-align during course. An ability ours don't have. The Simufly has to my knowledge also a wider variety for errors incorporated so you woulb be a bit more busy using that version. "Our" INS more or less works like a GPS with an old GUI .... and it is dead precise so you won't experience any deviations form the original programming throughout your trip.

We "assume" he´s programmig it correctly, but, none of us can "actually see" precisely what he´s doing and which is why I´ve asked him to kindly do as I´ve suggested .... in the hope that someone, else, might identify what he´s doing wrong .... if in fact he´s doing anything wrong at all !
I simply want to cover "ALL" possibilities .... be they programming or otherwise .... and I see no harm in asking him to advise accordingly.
That in iself might benefit other end users, beyond the individual requesting assistance, so far as I´m concerned.
I´m not aware (that I immediately recall at least) of any similar reports regarding INS/AP coupling issues with the L1011 panels .... in fact iI know of at least 1 NZ user whom, apparently, isn´t having any problems at all .... or so that end user advises me.
"CRISSO69" .... please consider what I´ve requested .... and .... in the event that you do opt to exchange the HJG supplied INS for the SIMULFLY supplied CIVA version then please remember that we/HJG do not provide support for that particular utility.

Well, for what it's worth, I'm using the panel that came with my HJG L-1011 and to navigate with/by the INS I just select which waypoint [preloaded naturally] I want to go to via the "WPT CHG" button and push the "INS" button on the Autopilot Panel and away we go. 'Course the Autopilot Master has to be on.

Gentlemen, firstly thank you for your initial contributions and comments and please, don't worry, I'm the greatest supporter of open forum/intelligent debate and will never take affront to anything said or suggested here. ;D Since at least one other user finds the INS button on the Autopilot panel works I will try again and document my experience fully either way. (It will only be in a few days since, I'm travelling away from home in the interim.) To re-iterate, I am familiar and fairly experienced with using both the Simufly Delco-Carousel INS (Tinmouse 737-200/Maltby VC10 to name but two) also, have used the HJG 'slightly simpler' version with the B727-200 and B707-420, previously always with successful coupling. However, maybe I'm pushing the right buttons but, not necessarilty in the right order.... I'll revert in due course.

Glad to help "CRISSO69". If I can´t do so myself personally though .... then there´s usual a wealth of End User experience available per this forum and which generally results in such issues being resolved completly .... if not being better understood. I´m about to travel too .... SO .... this´s be one of my very last postings until later on during the week .... all going well ! Mark C BOG/COL

Ok, I can now update as follows. I have 2 HJG Tristars installed under FS9 - 1) L1011-1 with 22B Tape Panel and; 2) L1011-200 with 524B Standard Panel.
I can now advise that, the L1011-200 with 524B Standard Panel works fine in coupling the INS to the Autopilot. (The cursor changes to a hand when you move it over the appropriate glareshield INS button and illuminates/actives accordingly.) I managed a successful flight earlier today fully employing the INS navigation.
However, it was the L1011-1 with the 22B Tape Panel that I had the previous problem with and, still do since, when you move the cursor over the above mentioned glareshield INS button - it doesn't change thus, cannot be activated.
I respectfully submit that, there may a line or two of programming missing from the 22B Tape Panel config?
Anyway, hope my experience is of some help to other users and the Guys at HJG. Thanks again for the feedback sofar.

Odd this should appear affect 1 panel version and not the other/s .... since, so far as I'm aware, both the AP and INS provided in each of the 4 L1011 panel versions we provide is identical in every respect ! I'll forward your report to George when I have time to to so .... considering I've only just just flown in/home. It may be a few days before I can get back to you regarding this .... assuming I do have anything to report at all. Mark C AKL/NZ

I just tried the INS on the -22B Tape panel and it worked no problem. You must remember though to turn the autopilot on BEFORE pressing the INS button though...

I'm pleased to inform you that the problem has been solved -- crisso69 still had Ken Mitchell's original Z_L1011KM.CAB installed for some reason, instead of the updated HJG version. (The PM I'd mentioned was a request for the timestamps of his gauge files, which instantly revealed the problem.)

"EXCELLENT WORK" George ! Folks .... what George is implying here is, something I've lways stressed (or at tleast tried to) this the importance of using only versions of gauges for the HJG/KM/CARTY L1011 panels which supplied by us/HJG. These are different from those of the original KM L1011 panels releases. Indeed some of the panel BMPs are also different from the originals too. When transitioning from one panel release version to the next (ours) one must replace "EVERYTHING". Well done .... and "THANKS AGAIN" George ! Mark C AKL/NZ
