OK guys and gals... here I am with my nice shiny new PC (3.2 Ghz, 2Gb ram, etc...) with my first time install of FS9. On my old Win98 machine I was flying FS2002, so FS9 is totally new to me. Now I got questions. The first 2 things that bug me... 1. How can I eleminate that select a flight screen after starting the program and just get into the airplane right from the get go? 2. How can I (is it even possible now?) get the menu bar at the top of the screen to turn on and stay on? It's annoying to me, having to press the ALT key every time I access the menus. Thanks in advance, and I'm sure I'll have more later! Dee ;D

Nice news Dee! I will try to help you, so.... Here's a great tool for FS9 and FSX: www.wolfgang-picheta.de/ (on the right side there's a Union Jack. Click on it and scroll down. Then download the version for FS9.) Play with it and I'm sure you'll love it. Q1: If you mean the menue where you can choose your aircraft, the airport, etc., then I don't know if that's possible. Q2: Press Alt+Enter (at least that's the keystroke in the German version) then maximize (if necessary) the window. This also saves some framerates, too. Have fun with FS9! Klaus

If you set up a flight and save it, then make that the default flight it will restart at that position every time bypassing the menu. Paul

1. How can I eleminate that select a flight screen after starting the program and just get into the airplane right from the get go?
2. How can I (is it even possible now?) get the menu bar at the top of the screen to turn on and stay on? It's annoying to me, having to press the ALT key every time I access the menus.
1. Eliminate the opening screen menu, here-
- In fs9.cfg
[MISC] COM_RATE=7 LOG_TIME=0 FOREIGN_TRANSLATOR=0 LOG_FILE= [STARTUP] DEMO=0 LOADSIM=1 LOADWINDOW=1 SHOW_OPENING_SCREEN=1 < - - make this 0 STARTUP_DEMO=
With win7, the path to FS9.cfg is
Computer/Local Disk/Users/Owner/App data/Roaming/Microsoft/FS9
If you don't see 'App Data' go into folder options and make sure to enable 'see hidden files'.
2. In windowed view, the menu is always available, in full screen you have to hit 'Alt'
CORRECTION - In windowed mode, right click on the screen and at the bottom of that menu is the option of removing overhead menu ;D

If you are using Win 7, then you need FSDS V3.51 as V 2 has to many issues. I use Win 7 64 and FSDS V3.51, and even that has a few issues. Welcome back to the life sapping FS world ;D Paul

Going to FSDS v3 is a non-starter for me. I was actually on the beta test team for it. Didn't agree with the direction it was taking. So I'm sticking with v2.24. Among other things, I love the simple "on-board" compiling method (I really hated that X-file bs and that freaky outside MakeMDL utility makes my blood boil...). Okay, I'll stop and take a deep breath now. ;D I haven't had (or at least noticed) any problems operating FSDS v2 inside the Windows 7 environment... yet. I've downloaded one of my old projects from Free Flight Design's website and loaded it in the program and have been practicing and getting back up to speed. No problems yet. The real test (I guess) will be when (or if) I can get the old source files off the old HDD from my old computer. Everybody cross your fingers and lets hope for the best. Dee

Tom Gibson's the man to talk about FSDS V2 problems under Win 7. He's stopped using it now because parts tend to disappear! Its s bit more subtle in FSDS V3.51. You load a new part or merge an FSC, and the whole model disappears!! Crashing is much worse under Win 7 64. Under 32 bit, just FSDS crashes. Under 64 bit, the whole system can black screen and take 3 or 4 cold starts to recover. I hope it works better for you, and good luck trying to recover your old files. Paul

Update: So far, I have not experienced any problems working with FSDS v2 in the Windows 7 environment. (Knock on wood!) I think I have found a method of getting the old model source files off my old HDD from the old dead PC. Everyone keep your fingers crossed! One thing I have discovered, much to my chagrin... I need to spend some serious hours in the Cessna and relearn how to fly again! Boy oh boy, I'm telling you! I couldn't pass a BFR right now, even if my life depended on it! ;D Dee

Glad it's working for you. I'm still getting the complete fuselage section disappearing even though I'm just welding points together! Most frustrating. Because of this sort of problem, I save regularly and restart regularly, it does seem to hep. Fly??? I've not flown since I found AI back in 2006 Better not let me near the controls ;D Paul
