Several years ago I downloaded several base packs without incident. However, in trying to go back and download some new ones, I cannot seem to get anything to work correctly.
I have followed the instructions as best I know how, but when I go to select an aircraft in FS9, the airplane simply does not show up as an aircraft, even though it clearly exists in the Aircraft file.
I confess I am not good at this, and I am sure that the problem is on my end. In any event, could anyone pick an aircraft....any aircraft....and walk me through the process on how to install it?
Thank you.

It would be far more helpful to know "PRECISELY" which aircraft base packs you're apparently trying to install .... along with "PRECISELY" which aircraft textures for these also 9 times out of 10 .... the reason why add-on aircraft don't appear in the MSFS Aircraft Selection Menu is due to simple/fundamental errors in regard to CFG.FILE editing .... OR .... a valid aircraft folder (possibly the actual aircraft base pack folder itself) still being retained inside the container from the original ZIP file. More often than not .... when these sorts of situations occur .... it can also be the result of folk having forgotten to edit the [FLTSIM.XX] data line in their ADD TO AIRCRAFT texture data to read [FLTSIM.0] for the very first texture entry .... with each successive texture addition , in a chain of textures for the same aircraft) then following in numerical sequence. The above are some of the most commonly reoccurring errors, but, really need you state which files are involved in your particular case Mark C AKL/NZ

I got that too once or twice, and finally found the problem. But like Mark said, it would be better to know exactly which aircraft.
For what I've read, the first advice I can give you is to double check the name of the texture folder and the name of the texture in your "Aircraft.CFG". A point, a number or a letter can simply be the cause of your problem.

That would, normally, only result in a texture-less/"NAKED" aircraft/model appearing in the MSFS Aircraft Selection Menu .... but .... most probably wouldn't account for any aircraft "NO SHOW".
I'm bargaining that he's, possibly, forgotten to edit his FLTSIM.XX entry correctly .... or .... maybe got a valid folder still retained insider the containing folder from the original ZIP file .... or .... hes' edited something else incorrectly in regard to the PANEL.CFG or SOUND.CFG .... and which can/"WILL" cause an "NO SHOW" within the MSFS Aircraft Selection Menu after installation.
Hopefully .... he'll advise "precisely' what he's trying to install in terms of base pack and textures etc.

I have recently come across a couple of texture problems with the B727-200ADVC which required editing.
1. title=Vistaliners Boeing 727-224/Adv Continental 1977 sim=B727200A_VL model= panel= sound= 2. // Change "xx" to next title=Vistaliners Boeing 727-2M7 Adv Qatar Airways 1997 sim=B727200A_VL model= panel= sound=
Should be: sim=B727200ADVC...or else the aircraft will not show.

"YES" .... I reported this to Dan just the other day (whilst the recent L1011-150 issue was being addressed) .... in respect of some B727 textures. apparently, not displaying their correct SIM= data. It would appear that the author of those B727 textures bearing this FLSTIM.XX data error is likely still ("inadvertently") using the original VL supplied FDE (the AIR.FILE at least) rather than the HJG supplied FDE which is "by far superior" .... OR .... it's also possible that "some" of the very earlist HJG B727-200 textures (early 2009) might have been uploaded for release prior to their AIR.FILE definitions actually being finalised .... hence the error/s Herman's detected. STILL .... The author of this particular thread really needs to advise "precisely" what he's trying to install .... so his situation can be analysed properly .... and the very best, possible, advice then provided for his particular situation. Right now .... it's not known what he's got and is trying to install Mark C AKL/NA

I have a similar problem .I downloaded the Douglas DC9-30 pack.I cannot open the cfg file to edit it to make it work in FS9 . I downloaded a program which was supposed to let me open up the file and now all those files are red with the Adobe icon on them and It can't open them either.I am running fltsim2004 in Windows xp .My question is what program or tool can be used in windows xp to edit the cfg file?

Hello, Maybe .. I write maybe ! .. this can help you www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?249842-unable-to-use-downloaded-aircraft&highlight=AdobeNormally you don't need any additional software to open a CFG file .. You just use the "Notepad" from Windows I read that under some recent Win OS (post XP) it's necessary to use some procedure .. including if I remember well .. a transfer of the file (to edit) on the desktop ... Other members .. users of Win 7 or 8 can certainly tell more about ! Regards.

I don't think so .... since I think the issue you, you're experiencing, is likely to result from an entirely different scenario to that discussed above ....
"I sUSPECT" .... that if you're unable to edit your CFG.FILE with the necessary ADD TO AIRCRAFT/FLTSIM.XX texture data then it's highly likely the CFG.FILE you're trying to work with may have its Read Only attribute activated.
"IF I'M RiGHT" .... then all you need to do is "UNCHECK" this Read Only attribute per the folowing very simple procedure ....
1. Right Click on the actual CFG.FILE.
2. Select "PROPERTIES" from the dialogue box with then appears.
3. Unchec/Un-Tick" the "READ ONLY" box drom the new dialogue box which opens .... then select "OK" to exit the CFG.FILE.
Performing that simple action should, then, enable to you to edit the CFG.FILE to your hearts content.
None of the CFG files contained within HJG Aircraft Base Packs should have their Read Only attribute activated by default, but, it can, sometimes (extremly rarely), happen on various OS during file extraction processes.
See how you go on the basis of this advice though.

Hello, I don't think it's a read only attribute problem .. Because if this is exact: this suggest another problem .. as it's always possible to "open" a CFG with read only attribute .. but if you make alterations (edit) it's not possible to save it ... IMHO Regards.

I was guessing, but, it all depends upon what he actually means by "OPEN".
I've known some people to say/use that term, in the past, but, what they really mean to communicate is that they can, in fact, open the CFG, but, can't seem to be able to be able to save what they copy & paste/"EDIT" into it .... precisely as you indicate, also, of such a READ ONLY scenario.
He needs to clarify this .... and then .... if necessary/appropriate .... try ouit what I've suggested .... "IF" what I've suggested might, then, apply at all.

Thank you Mark and Gus for your help.I used Windows note pad and can now edit the cfg file.I reinstalled the DC9-30 base pack and followed the instructions. I am unsure on how to add a texture to the aircraft.I have read the instructions that came with the textures but i am still not clear as how it's done. Please bear with me.It's all there model, panel, air file, cfg file. These aircraft look amazing and I have seen many of them fly into KTPA when I was stationed there on the ARFF crew.Once again thank you for your help.

OK .... which particular DC9-30 textures are you trying to install .... AND .... which particular DC9-30 Aircraft Base pack are you trying to install it into ?
Let me know .... AND .... if you can bear with me also (according to my own convenience/availability here) .... then I'll try'n talk/guide you through it .... on the basis of you, first, providing the above-required information.

Try right click on the main file in which the CFG is located. Click on Property, You should have a tab Security. Click on that, then edit, then highlight the user, then Add, and click on the top square to allow, and apply, then close and back to the cfg file and that should give you the permission to change and edit the cfg. file. It all has to do with permission to change these type of files in Windows.

I downloaded the DC9-30 base pack version JT8D-15v1.3 which has model.01 though model.06 the texture I am trying to install is texture.vja_1996n930vv.
