I´ve known about this particular project being under development for "quite a few months past" .... and to be perfectly honest .... it neither interests nor concerns me Mark C BOG/CO

Both Aerosim (DC-8-50 thru DC-8-70 series) and now Just Flight (DC-8-10 thru DC-8-40 series) although very nice eye candy and very tempting, still lacks in accuracy and realism when it comes to engine sounds... that being the case with many payware. Researching and acquiring actual recordings of vintage classic jetliners such as the DC-8 series with all the different engine types as this aircraft was improved over the years by then Douglas Aircraft Company, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls Royce, and eventually CFM International with it's re-engine project, has been very challenging but achievable... HJG still remains the best freeware with it's extensive DC-8 series and sub-categories for each the type... I remain a freeware soundpacks developer. My biased opinion... Benoit

And my screenshots of HJG DC-8s can fool people into thinking the DC-8s are expensive payware Aerosim or Justflight DC-8s:) Aharon

I never liked the Aerosim version, they got some modeling things quite wrong IMHO. This one appears to be at least a nice model. I just really dont like FSX. I just thought this was interesting from an enthusiast perspective.

I guess we are protective over our stuff I am not a payware fan unless I have to go to get something I cant get elsewhere, fortunately the DC8 is free and here Look at the Capt Sim 707, besides the VC it offers very little to the wide range of variants panels sounds liveries etc etc compared to ours which is very very free, I assume that the same will be of this product, plus making it FSX only really annoys me FS9 is still the favoured sim by many..

As I mentioned above .... I´ve known about the development of this new JF DC8 project for the past several months. And it "DOES" appear to have some very nice and desirable features .... which HJG, admittedly, can´t compete with .... BUT THEN AGAIN .... HJG and JF aren´t in competition anyway There´s no comparison between either groups product .... BUT AGAIN .... there was never meant to be right from the very start anyhow .... AND IN ANY CASE .... how could there be when the JF product "does" represent (and benefits from) such obviously more recent FS programming/technology. Additionally .... there´s no camparison between both groups either .... after all one´s a commercial enterprise (JF) whilst the other´s no more than "a very small volunteer group of FREEWARE FS enthusiasts" (HJG). Some people might regard this new JF DC8 product as being "some sort threat/challenge" to HJG .... BUT PERSONALLY .... I don´t and never have right from the very beginning. HJG´s always done it´s own thing .... according to its own strengths/abilities .... and it will continue to do so in the future too and whilst it still remains in operation. Some people like what HJG produce .... others don´t and expect far more than it really has the skills/capability of being able to deliver .... BUT .... at that end of the day both HJG .... and JF .... regardless .... can only do the very best they can .... only HJG´s never been interested in competing with anyone else whilst doing what its done In fact HJG will simply continue to .... (a) update "some" of what it can easily upgrade of its own currently existing product .... as it´s been planning to do, and actually doing, for a wee while past .... along with (b) working to develop further new product which it hopes to be able to release here in the not too distant future also. And that folks .... is "HONESTLY" the way I (personally) feel and see things .... whilst I continue trying to assist HJG to plod along at it own "FREE" and independent FS pace Mark C BOG/CO

The two questions that I ask and haven't seen an answer to on the JF DC-8 are - 1) are the silencers independently modelled? 2) Is the flight engineer's panel fully functional? If either are "no", then I'm not paying for it. The first is present in the HJG model and the second is the only "shortcoming" that I know even Dee wishes could have been fixed on the HJG model, so if they don't have both, then why spend money for what is in the end an inferior product to what's available for free?
BTW - This is how I judge all payware. It's the only (and I stress only) reason I ever bought the CLS DC-10 - it has a functional panel. Otherwise, I would've had only the SGA DC-10 on my computer. As it is, I spent a lot of time trying to patch the CLS panel into the SGA model, but got tired of trying to ham-handedly hack CLS's gauge programming to read the much better SGA flight dynamics.

I don´t think it really matters Chris .... "TO BE PERFECTLY HONEST" They/JF have done their thing (as HJG continues to do its own also) .... and some of what they´ve done "appears" to look "very nice" too .... and which even I must give them credit for As for the operational/technical functionality side of their new DC8 product is concerned .... I can´t make any judgements .... simply because I don´t have the product (and nor will I be investing in it anyway) .... BUT .... what I will say is .... such functionality is what both you, and I, personally like/expect (I know) .... HOWEVER .... it´s not necessarily what every other FS enthusiast (investor in this, or any other, FS product) actually wants to be bothered with (unfortunately) and in regard to what´s essentially "just a game" From my own personal FS development experience here at HJG .... it seems one´s potentially limiting the appeal of any FS product by making it "very functional/complex" .... BUT ALSO .... potentially limiting the appeal of any FS product by making it "not sufficiently functional/complex enough" too. It´s "a hard road to haul" with everyones expectations/preferences being so different. Both "FREEWARE" groups and comercial FS developers alike often can´t win/please everyone .... and that´s regardless of what they do in order to try´n satisfy an often ungrateful (even absusive at times) community Again .... that´s just my own "100 pesos" (roughly 50 cents US) worth of oppinion .... none of which is intended to revoke, or dilute, your own Mark C BOG/CO

Don't disagree Mark. Just stating my personal guidelines in hopes that someone here has either bought the product or has seen somewhere that shows/states that those items are present.

All I know is that Aerosim DC-8s' engines are beautiful details.

Ok...I broke down and bought it..even though Im not a huge FSX fan. Its a NICE model..with a presentable VC but thats about as far as it gets. The VC has a lot of non functional switches and buttons and systems modeling is MINIMAL. But..it looks good and as airliner VC's go its not bad. its not on par with Captain Sim or PMDG, but its "adequate". Its not marketed as a PMDG bird or anything complicated so in a way the mission is fulfilled. It flies very nice from a hand flying perspective but has some very big issues with the FDE. You can raise the nose off the ground on takeoff roll at about 25 knots Flying within normal speed parameters and using some standard procedures yields a heavy but smooth feel that makes it pleasurable to fly. The drag modeling in turns is way off..you need to go to almost full power to keep your speed from decaying. With the AP on turns seem to require FULL rudder anytime the airplane rolls...weird. It can stop on the proverbial Dime...but its not the only airplane in FS that has this issue. The majority of the texture sheets are high res...2048 X 2048. They look great but its FAR too much for all but the fastest and beefiest graphic cards. Mine can run it ok, but the load times are painfully slow. The model is superb. Very nice details and lines. The main gear modeling and action is excellent. The engines seem a bit too "fat" to me and the intake lips of the nacelles are a bit too thick, but it is probably the nicest looking DC-8 model there is. It has a 3D interior with no one aboard..kind of funny, and honestly its just a waste of polygons and use of more textures, hence frames probably suffer more for some folks due to this. This just isnt a big deal to me and with airliners frankly I think its a dumb idea. Night lighting doesnt look quite right because the roof inside is lit up and its not like a window is lit from a nearby spot as in the real world. I rather like the way pure textures look. Thats just personal preference. Sounds are very good, they did a good job here. With a few tweaks and some options thrwon in...like no cabin..this will be a well recieved and very good addition to anyones stable. like I said...Im not a huge FSX fan...but I REALLY like DC-8's so I had to bite the bullet and get this thing.

Thanks for the review, it is always nice to here an opinion on a new product and I reckon you can't get a more accurate one than your's Jim Sounds like that bird will have to have a few patches released to make her right, shame about the over the top texture sizes this is happening more and more I hear in FSX and like you say you need a huge system to run it:(

That´s quite a "decent" .... and above all "very balanced" (I trust) oppinion/appraisal Jim ("THANKS") .... and it´s appreciated too .... especially comming from someone of your own professional background NOW THEN .... I´ve got a bit of work to do on the HJG DC8´s .... SO .... I guess I better get back into it Mark C BOG/CO
