I am a huge XP fan but my laptop came with Win 7 and my main PC for FS is the XP machine, sadly its getting to be a problematic thing of late and I have decided to fit a new HD in and set it up for Win 7 Pro, all running ok but my FS on the old HD is huge and I mean huge...... I dont fancy loading it again as I doubt I have enough years in me to do it all So I recall that in XP you could install FS9 again then empty the folder and drag your old folder over then hey presto all ok..... Will this work in Win 7 ??

Tony,
There are better experts on this than me, but I did do the changeover to W7 a few years ago. What I did was backup all my FS folder to an external HD. Then I installed FS9 into W7...I think this is necessary to make sure it is properly in the registry. I than brought over all my backed up files into the new installation. Most worked fine. I did have issues with some items, like my PMDG 747. Planes like those need to be reinstalled directly once again to make sure they are in the registry. All the HJG planes/panels worked great just by dropping them into place. Payware stuff..it was good I had backups of the install exe and the keys.
The great benefit was a much more powerful computer and I found W7 to be a very stable platform and friendly to FS9

Ok Win 7 installed, FS9 installed and then I emptied the FS9 folder and put the original FS9 folder with all my files in. Started up, failed to load said it had encountered a problem, reboot still the same...So I assume I have to do a full install of all my add ons etc etc, sadly I do not have the time or desire to do this Any ideas??

Did you install FS9 in the Program(x86) location? That's where mine is and I've had no problem. All the HJG aircraft should be able to just be dropped into the aircraft folder with no problem. No different than what happens anyway with an HJG install.
The problem I ran into is with any other add-on that has an exe file for install. In that case you have to reinstall into FS9 using the exe file. In my case ActiveSky, Radar Contact, any PMDG plane, and most of the payware planes.
Try a single HJG plane and see if it works, then build up from there. I seem to remember it took me several days to get everything back up and running.

Thanks Mike, No I made a folder Flight Simulator 9 on the C Drive as I heard that it was best kept away from Program Files... I re installed the discs last night it works, so I then put in my old FS9.cfg it worked, now I will put the planes in then other bits until its all done again many many days away from a working system I think

Oh yes Tony, time consuming indeed... My PC which I use solely for FS and building soundpacks suffered a hard drive failure... Once it's been fixed, then comes the task of reinstalling both FS9 & FSX, ad-ons and my sound studio... Benoit

I think I had about 98% success. There were a couple of payware planes that never did make the port over to W7 and worked right; a CRJ if I remember was one. I've since added a lot of new planes with no issues whatsoever along with other add-ons such as FS Captain with also no problems.

Well I got it mostly sorted today, I have moved each folder at a time and found one DLL file causing the trouble, it was an add-on that was useless anyway! So I am looking at being workable soon, however I have a Saitek Flight Yoke, rudder pedals and throttle quadrant, the settings in the FS9 cfg did not work on Win7 so I have had to spend an age calibrating and assigning buttons etc, however its still not right it just wont work and is very touchy.... I can see this lot going on eBay and move back to a joystick!!

Not something that a registered version of FSUIPC might be able to assist you to configure .... is it Tony ?

Ok hair is falling out on this, tried FSUIPC registered copy... just not easy to use is it... trying to set up that saitek crap.... I gave up and will revert to trying in FS to set it up again, if no luck I am binning the lot and going back to a joystick... Patience is something I lost many years ago

Does Saitek have a W7 driver that you could install? That might help. I had to update my CH driver for my yoke and pedals with the move to W7.
