I´ve never heard of yhr use of inflight reverse idle on "all 4" engines.
Even the DC8 AOM (the extracts I have from these publications at least) clarly state the use of inflight reverse idle on the "inboard number 2 and 3 engines only" .... to aid descent .... because the spoilers can´t be used inflight.

I cannot remember if it was a 50 or 60 series. Its been a number of years, but I do remember several occasions coming into KLAX on Delta and seeing the cascade vanes deployed on both the inboard and outboard. I asked one of the crew one time about cycling the engine into reverse in flight and was told something about prevents cold-soaking the FCU on long descents if the engines stayed at idle. Might have been pulling my leg on that part. But, I can distinctly remember seeing them deployed. The ride down was interesting with a rather high body angle, sort of a reverse of the take-offs out of John Wayne.....
