Hi all. I was on approach in the DC9-20 with the autopilot coupled to the ILS when all of a sudden the autopilot bowtie lit up very brightly. The two upper GA arrows were lit green, the left lower INST arrow was also lit up green along with the large arrow pointing down marked AP. The right lower INST arrow was lit up red. The approach continued without problem and upon disconnecting the autopilot and clicking the rest button all lights extinguished. I have not seen it light back up since except for the flashing upon autopilot disengagement. Was this a glitch or is this supposed to show an abnormal condition?

Late reply I´m sorry .... not been feeling too well at all lately BUT ANYWAY .... Could just have have been one of those "a spurious (type) FS glitches" .... since I´ve never seen the entire Bowtie (GA and INST indications in particular) illuminate/light-up like a christmas tree .... and despite the fact it obviously can, but, I can´t recite the condition/s necessary in order for it to be able do so. I´ve only ever seen, what you describe, having seen mostly .... i.e. the flashing Down Arrow indication upon AP disengage .... as well as an 80 KT, and another SPEED related, advisory too during the T/O roll and roll-out after landing respectively .... so .... I can´t really put a finger on this for you. The fact, you say, your coupled ILS approach to landing continued normally is "comforting enough" though One thought that did cross my mind was if either the AP or FD Mode Selector switches weren´t "synchronised" correctly for an AP controlled ILS/AUTO APPR landing, then, that may (possibly) trigger an indication such as you´ve reported .... BUT .... upon trying this out, myself, whilst using the DC-9-20 also (JT8D-9 version in my case), I couldn´t seem to reproduce the condition you´ve witnessed .... even when I randomly adjusted the the FD Mode Selector switch (only), and to settings other than what should be set during such a coupled approach to loanding. Like your experience .... my own coupled approaches to landing were otherwise performed (seemimgly) faultlessly also, so, I wouldn´t be too concerned in regard to what you´ve observed on that one occasion. It could just be an isolated event .... or .... one of those minor details we´ll have to learn to live with ! Mark C BOG/CO

I'm responsible for this "easteregg" as I programmed the bowties used on Stellans DC-9 panel. The fault reported by the lower INST arrow in red points to one of the first officers flight instruments in error ,namely the RDI (HSI) on his/her side. This RDI(HSI) will show red flags as well as a frozen gyro meaning one will not be able to read A/C heading on that RDI/HSI. I'm not going to tell what randomly triggers this situation, but since this HGJ panel doesn't use Stellans RDIs /HSIs, I fully understand this could be rather frustrating. With kind regards, Geir
