Hi everyone.
I just completed a flight with the HJG 717 for the first time. I had an issue with the aircraft bobbing the nose up and down between about +-500 fpm and -0.6 and -2.5 trim. I was cruising at FL330 and Mach .78. I tried enabling Yaw Damper at the advice of a fellow pilot, which may have mellowed it a little, but not much. I also tried disengaging altitude hold, stabilizing at about +-100 fpm, and reenaging altitude hold, but that didn't work either. I'm not sure what the problem was. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

It shouldn't .... of course !
What add-on panel version are you using with you HJG B717-200 ?
Please state the file name, author, and where you got it from .... and w'll take things slowly from there.

Exactly! I am using the default CRJ panel. I wish there was something better out there, but I have yet to find a good working one. Thanks for your timely response. I am also a Mark

I'm not an FSX user myself .... BUT .... the HJG B717-200 simulations, despite being designed for FS2004 use, "ARE" also "FSX portable" .... though not FSX native. All that means in they can be used in FSX. Normally .... an issue, like the one you're reporting, might indicate of some degree of AP (panel/gauge) incompatibility (I assume what you're reporting was accuring during AP comtrolled flight) with the panel you're using .... rather than the simulation itself. The simulation run fine in FS2004 .... and FDE-wise it should perform equally fine in FSX too .... in fact theres' no reason why it shouldn't. Our B717-200 & MD80/90 specific EFIS panel "IS NOT" FSX compatible .... so .... we can't offer you an FSX option/alternative, but, if you're usuing a CRJ panel with your HJG B717-200 .... THEN .... you might like to "consider commenting out" (per // strokes) the entire AUTOPILOT section provided within the HJG supplied B717-200 AIRCRAFT.CFG (don't delete it though) .... and replace it with the entire AUTOPILOT section from your CRJ AIRCRAFT.CFG instead .... and see if that makes any difference at all. It may .... or it may not .... but .... it's the only suggestion I can offer you Mark C AKL/NZ

I am an FSX user, and there might be 2 things happening here:
1. You enabled the Autopilot in a climb that was faster than 500 fpm .
2. And or your weight is not off. There are some MD-80 and 90 series panels that are much closer to the real one that work great! and are more realistic to the 717. I've had this problem on and off, but it's usually after I've leveled off at max climb angle with the auto throttle set at max cruise. I'll run a couple of flights this weekend since I haven't been in the 717 for a while. Working on scenery at present. Falcon

Coincidentally, just prior to reading this mail, I completed a flight with an HJG B 717 and there were no problems at all.
I used an MD 80 Panel that I found on flightsim.com The author of the Panel is Marco Spada and the file is md80plax.
There are also a few other panels available that would be suitable to use for the 717.

Thanks for performing that check Herman If the SPADA MD-80 panel you used with the HJG B717-200 results in stable flight (as is my experience also using the SOUTHEY MD-80/90/B717-200 panel and our B717-200 simulation in FS2004), then, that more-or-less confirms that our B717-200 simulation is "in the clear" .... and "PBANDPIKLEBOY" experience is likely to be the result of the CRJ panel (more than likely it's AP) he's assigned to our simulation. "PBANDPIKLEBOY" .... try my suggestion of copying the AP data from the FSX CRJ AIRCRAFT.CFG to the AP section of the HJG B717-200 AIRCRAFT.CFG (don't delete the HJG data though .... just comment it out per // strokes and replace it with the other data) .... and see if that resolves you issue. OR .... Given the absence of an FSX specific B717-200 panel offering by HJG .... then .... consider doing what Herman's done by assigning an FSX compatible MD-80 panel (the Marco SPADA one in this particular case) to your HJG B717-200 .... and see how you get along with this other alternative option. Just be aware though .... "IF" using any non-HJG supplied panel then we won't be able to provide technical support for it Mark C AKL/NZ

I copied the aircraft.cfg to another location and then replaced the AP section with that of the FSX CRJ.
I just tried a climb up as far as FL280 with similar weights and the same route. Worked fine.
I also have an FSX MD-88 panel I use made by FSFSCONV. I think I'll stick with the CRJ panel for now unless the problem comes up again.
I'll be flying the 717 on a flight tomorrow night and I will post back the results.

It might also be worth mentioning that I once had the same problem with the Dreamwings Embraer ERJ-170. It might be worth looking into a good panel for that as well.

"IF" .... your sorted .... then .... "YOUR SORTED" .... but .... there's no reason why the like of what you've experienced should be an Intermittently occurring issue .... if I'm understanding you correctly. "IF" you're flying within a constantly/rapidly changing weather environment (subject to rapid and constant temperature/pressure changes I mean) .... THEN .... the AP might have difficulty maintaining level/stable flight .... but .... I think such a scenario would be "incredibly rare" event !!!! Can't advise you in regard to the ERJ .... since it's not an HJG offering Sometimes also .... it pays to bear0-in-mind that one can't assign any old panel with any old simulation because incompatibilities with gauge/s FDE interaction/s can result .... to possibly cause the like of what you've apparently recently experienced. This's why we like to advocate use of the panels we design and/or host and which are (mostly) "customised" for each of our simulations .... and where we can't do this, in the case of FSX sometimes, then, people like Herman are usually always very helpful recommending something which they do know, from experience, works well .... although, as I said above, we can't provide advice/support for any such non-HJG offerings Mark C AKL/NZ

It is your choice,of course, but why would you want to use a CRJ Panel in the 717 when a MD80 Panel would be so much more suitable. They are readily available and are quite easy to install and would represent a more realistic view, since the 717 and DC9\MD80's are closely related. Herman

What Herman's advocating is very good and sound advice "PBANDPIKLEBOY" .... since the flightdeck of later model MD-80's/-90's are almost identical to that of the B717-200 .... and which was basiclly just a BOEING inherited (from MDC) and produced extention of the MD-80/90 SERIES aircraft anyway. Doing what Herman suggests would certainly result in "a far more authentic nad enjoyable" simulation experience than that which might be realised from using a CRJ panel with the B717-200 Mark C AKL/NZ

Pbandpickleboy,
Why do you want to use CRJ panel without autospeed for 717 that has autospeed unless somebody tells me that 717 does not have autospeed??
Regards,
Aharon

Here a picture of the Panel that I use for the 717. It is by Golding\Spada and is readily available at flightsim.com. ( fsx_md-80-87_panel_project ) It works great and is equipped with Auto Throttle. That download actually features 4 different panels, so you can pick the one you like. Herman

Herman, that looks very similar to the MD-80 panel I have. I don't think it looks anything like a 717 panel, hence why I chose the CRJ panel which looks closer to me, even though the 717 is more similar to the DC-9 and MD-80.
Aharon, the default CRJ panel in FSX does have speed hold functionality, even though to the best of my knowledge the real plane does not.
I did not get to fly tonight, but I plan to hopefully use the 717 tomorrow night. Again, I will post the results of that flight, probably on Monday.
