All of a sudden about half of my aircraft have the HSI off by about 15 degrees. The error seems to be west, i.e if I'm set for a heading of 60degrees it reads 45 degrees. Has caused me all sort of nav errors in flight and is most noticeable on ILS approaches. I set the course indicator for the runway heading, only to find it is about 15 degrees off. Just started happening about 5 days ago. Any ideas?? Mike

I used to have a similar issue (only occasionally) with my FS9 (not FSX).
I was never able to figure out the cause of this. At one time I thought that it may be linked to a bad VOR frequency.
The only way that I was able to correct this, was to shut down FS9 and start over.
I did a new install of FS9 a while back and it has not occurred again.

I think I may have solved it; but will take a few more tests. I did a search on avsim an found that some airport scenery files will reset the HSI to read true instead of magnetic, and that matches what I see. I removed 3 sceneries I installed the past week and it looks better, but need to test with a few more planes. How those sceneries change the magdec.dll is a mystery known only to MS.

Hi friends: Another instance for the theory that the "usual suspects" for problems with FS are addons especially sceneries. In the German Forum FLIGHTX people were posting they had given up installing addons as some of them can spoil your FS forever at least until reinstalling FS from scratch. Kind regards Walter P.S.: This doesnt apply to HJG addons!

Airport runway courses given in the AFCAD files for some odd reason are given in magnetic (which changes through time) instead of true (which doesn't), this might be the source of your problem, especially with an updated magdec.bgl

Hi;
Yes the problem has to do with magnetic/true courses, the changes of the magnetic field over time and the FS 9 "world" which uses magnetic declinations of around 2000. If nowadays a guy (or girl) tries to create a FS 9 airport he will probably have maps of today and not of 2000. In his maps he will find a magnetic declination of today which can differ substantially from the declination of 2000. Using magnetic headings for runway designations has the reason of aligning the VORs, LOCs to magnetic also. Using too much realism in FS can create weird details. Kind regards
Walter
