Hello all,
I recently began a fresh install of FSX on my system, migrating to SE. I'm trying to reinstall the HJG MD-90 and DC-10 models into my sim. I'm following the FSX instructions, or so I think, but it appears on loading both of these models at night, regardless of repaint, generates semi-transparent textures on assorted fuselage parts. Are these models not FSX compatible? I know this usually points to a texture or light mapping issue on the model, but I'm not quite able to pinpoint it in these instances.
Any help would be appreciated. As always, thanks for what you guys do, HJG is a great collection of aircraft.
Thank you.

Firstly .... the DC-10's and MD-80's/90's are intended for FS2004 use (as ids the case with akll HJG 3D models and textures .... with nthe exception of those for the BAe 146-200/RJ-100 and CONCORDE which are FS2004 exclusive).
Secondly .... they "DO" work fine in FSX .... but .... aren't FSX native.
I've never heard of any "semi-transparent" textures issues in regard to either .... most of which have been around for since 2010 or there-abouts.
Nor should FS2004 or FSX impose any such issues or variation either .... so far as I'm aware.
Are you saying your issue has become apparentl only recently .... but .... weasn't evident before your reinstall ?

No, I'm trying them in FSX for the first time. I guess I'm confused then why the installation instructions mention FSX if they are intended for FS2004 only? Here is an example of semi-transparent night textures. From my understanding, though I'm not an aircraft modeler, it has to do with reflective surfaces on the model itself and light mapping/"_L" textures only at night. This model was fine when I ran FS2004. I suppose I misled myself when I saw FSX installation instructions.

Unfortunately your image isn't telling me much .... if anything at all I'm sorry Despite being FS2004 "intended" the DC-10's and MD-80's/90's are known work fine in FSX .... and which is why we're comfortable stating the FSX reference .... in fact the following audio-visual previews relate to our DC-10's "in FSX" specifically .... DC-10-10 www.youtube.com/watch?v=HF8x5mQDP0sDC-10-15 & -30 www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaAZzl0qmegDC-10-40 www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUUWIalbIyIAgain .... no such transparency issues have ever been reported regarding the MD80's/90's since released (around 2010) .... or the DC-10's since released (2014) .... so far as I'm aware. Have you modified any of your night lighting texture (L designated) BMP files ? .... or .... Have you installed/are you using anything that might have a global affect upon all such texture BMP files ? Not suggesting you have or that such is the cause of your particular issue .... I'm merely "CURIOUS" !!!! Mark C AKL/NZ

Are you using DX10? If so, deactivate it and see if your planes are working?
Also, if you are switching from FS2004 to FSX for same HJG planes, then what panels are you using for FSX for those same HJG planes?

Aharon

For now, I have the default 737 panel aliased to them. Haven't gotten to installing custom ones yet until I get the models working.

Strange .... in fact "VERY ODD" indeed !!!! "IF" valid .... at all .... then I "very much doubt" this's a panel related issue. It's either model or texture related .... more likely the latter. HOWEVER .... "IF" valid, then, it would "absolutely astound me" that nobody has ever reported such an issue, with either subject, and within FSX, since 2010 when some of these subjects were first released !!!! DX10 might (possibly) have some bearing on this .... but .... not being an FSX user I simply can't further advise regarding this Once again .... "no such issues" should be apparent in either FS2004 .... or FSX. JUST ON THE SUBJECT OF PANEL OPTIONS .... Don't be tempted to install any of our curent DC-10 panel range in FSX .... since they're not FSX compatible. New and dual FS2004/FSX DC-10 panels are under development .... as currently previewed .... but .... are still a fair while away from release yet. Mark C AKL/NZ

When I installed Calclassic Curtis C-46 Commando with custom made panel, I had same semi-transparent problem. So I changed from custom made panel to official Calclassic panel for C-46 and that solved the problem and it worked!!!
Why are you using 2 engine panel for three engine DC-10? Find FSX compatible three engine panel from freeware Overland MD-11 and it might solve your problem.
For your same two DC-10 and MD-90 planes, try installing two more liveries for each of your two planes and tell us what happens. REMEMBER to use adminstrator's rights and use correct model/correct engine.
When you say default 737 panel aliasing, WHICH one is it? Is it 737-400 panel or 737-800 panel? In case you are not aware, you are supposed to use 737-800 panel, not 737-400 panel for MD-90s in your new FSX.

If I recall it has something to do with the ALPHA channels associated with the night textures in FSX vice FS9. I dont use FSX much and that looks like possibly one of my paints. I am not sure, but the solution may be to resave the night textures without an alpha layer. If that does not do the trick save it with an alpha texture which is opposite of the way FS9 does reflectivity....meaning the alpha layer should be opposite of what it normally is in FS9.
I will do some checking here. Which aircraft and texture are you trying to use??

I will do some checking here. Which aircraft and texture are you trying to use?? MD-90 with the modern Delta colors available on this website is one example. DC-10-30ER with Northwest bowling shoe colors from the site is another. Thanks.

MD-90 with the modern Delta colors available on this website is on example. Okay see if you can solve the problem by downloading Air Aruba livery from MD-90 download center and then copy from Air Aruba folder all textures EXCEPT MD-80_00 texture and MD-80_01 and then paste the textures into Delta folder overwriting all textures. Then tell us what happens. I would be surprised if this trick does not work for you. Regards, Aharon

Hello captkorndog;
I was curious about your night time transperancy issue, so I decided to load up the two aircraft you mentioned in my FSX program.
What your night image is showing is the rear fuselage of the MD-90 aircraft and I can definetly see some transperancy of the right wing trailing edge and flap guides through the rear fuselage,
In my system there was absolutely no nightime or daytime transperancy issues at all, so I really do not know what is causing this on your system. I am using VISTA Premium.
I would post some images , but there seems to be a problem with Photobucket right now.

After doing some checking, I dont see this issue on my system. I am using older drivers and Win 7 so that may have something to do with it. Everyones GPU and driver set up is different and system issues and drivers can cause things like this to occur sometimes. Pinpointing it can be a painstaking and sometimes futile effort.
