Some time ago I was experiencing continuous freeze up's of FSX. It seemed to coincide with a problem I was having with Windows Updates. Because of that I am no longer getting any updates. Is it possible that FSX is somehow dependent on Windows Updates to function properly ? Herman

So far as I'm aware .... FSX "is not" dependant/reliant on M$ updates to run .... BUT .... "GOD ONLY KNOWS" what M$ updates do to that might affect "IT"/it's ability to be able to run normally .... along with a lot of other things too. I think your particular issue might be of a far more fundamental foundation though Herman .... but .... I "wouldn't have a clue" as to how, what, why, or where. That FSX is "A MONGREL" .... and I hate the bloody thing Mark C AKL/NZ

Yes, I should probably give up on trying to fix it.

If FSX freezes up, hover your mouse to FSX window bar on bottom of window screen, right click, and try to close it which creates error message that will explain what is wrong with FSX.

OK....thank you Aharon for your suggestion. However, I would be unable to do that, because it is not just a matter of FSX freezing up, but it is the fact that my whole computer is freezing up, preventing me to do anything. Nothing works....the mouse or the keyboard are dead. One thing I may try is running FSX in Windowed mode to see if it makes any difference? Herman

If your PC is "locking-up/freezing" Herman .... then .... I's reason that a recent update might be conflicting with something else, or, you might be suffering from a progressing hardware fault.
A trip to the PC doctor .... I think .... short of a new PC not knowing your current machines age and the geneology of its components.
Judging from your latest description your issue may have nothig whatsoever to to with FSX .... or even FS2004 .... unless the problem is occurrig "only when you run FSX" and not whilst running FS2004 or any other non-FS related programs within WINDOWS.

OK thank's Mark for your continued interest.
The problem occurs only when I run FSX. The mystery is...that after 8 min. it all unfreezes and then continues for another 10 to 15 min and then freezes up again. It almost seems that there is a timing device causing this because of its regularity.
I'll try running FSX in Windowed mode to see if it responds any different.

A "cyclic" and "recurring" issue .... and only when FSX's running aye Looks likely to be your FSX installtion then .... and possibly in relation to something like an add-on program or utility that may be constantly running in the background inside it/FSX .... like weather or ATC generation for example (try turning thewe "OFF" and see if thaqt makes any difference) .... snd might be the cause of your issue. A developing harware issue would likely affect everything, but, if it's only occurring during FSX sessions, then, that's likely where your particular issue is founded. Have you installed any driver updates lately .... or .... have you experimented by installing other drivers in attempt to try'n resolve this issue ? You may also need to think back to what you've installed "just prior to" this particular problem first becomming apparent .... and consider removing it. These sorts of issues can be "INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT" to try'n troubleshoot and can often be case specific too .... given that most systems are different and what runs fine on one system won't necessarily run fine universally. Sorry to know this's continuing to plague your enjoyment of FS Herman. Mark C AKL/NZ

There are error messages even if you do not see. Your Windows operating system contains records of error messages and reasons for freeze up. Look for those error messages in your Windows operating system's section something like system resources or system administrator or something

OK...thank you again Mark and Aharon.
I did try FSX in Windowed mode but the problem still occurred.
One thing that is also adding to this issue and is quite odd is. As long as I remain on the ground ( and I have have done this for more than 45 min.) there are no freeze ups, but as soon as I get airborne the freeze up happens within 10 mins.
To be honest Mark, my enjoyment for FS is still there, just not with FSX. I have two separate installations of FS 2004 on my system ( and that is something you really cannot do easily with FSX). One of the two FS9 has aircraft from the 1930's to the 1970's and the other has aircraft covering the more modern era, and they both run very well.
You may ask....why do I bother with FSX. Well, because I purchased it many years ago and it is there. The only plus of FSX, that I see, is that the graphics and Scenery are a bit better. Other than that, it is as you say, a "Mongrel".
It also presents a bit of a challenge to try to get it going properly. So I will look at some of the suggestions made.

I'd still be inclined to look at either your graphics card and/or drivers .... as well as shutting down any weather, ATC, or other utilities you might be using within FSX since your issue could be as fundamental as something (like these) imposing more stress than FSX can handle "on your system".
My understanding is that FSX does tax PC resources somewhat more than FS2004 does.

Herman, If your pc or FSX freezes up, the Windows operating system has records of reports explaining cause of it somewhere in the operating system. I forgot where but you will find it in system administration or something. It records every crash or freeze and explains it while naming some file as cause of freeze. Here is tip for you: www.avsim.com/files/go/1f10b726c327aba4393da3bbcb67dd8d/avsim-crash-to-desktop-guide-for-fsx-fsx-se-and-p3dJust click on button that says agree and download so that you can download the PDF manual on how to solve crash problems.

Hi Herman, another thing you could try that has been working for a few people is renaming your FSX.cfg to fsx_old.cfg and letting FSX rebuild it for you. You will then have to put in the satandard AffinityMask and HIGHMEMFIX tweaks but it seems to work for some.
Also, make sure you have the latest fsuipc if you use it and your video card, sound drivers are up to date as mark suggested.
Cheers,
Nathan.
