Hi friends: After reunification the German Airforce used some Russian hardware also an IL-62M. This airplane later on was sold back to its Manufacturer and later flew in Iran as passanger airplane. Gossip says that exactly that crashed at Teheran Airport in a runway overrun during a snowstorm. Its pilots tried to land below minimums in an attempt to save the life of a passenger who suffered an heart attack during the flight. Kind regards Walter

Always liked/been fascinated by Russian airliners .... and the "mystique" behind the Russian culture too (well some of it at least) .... especially during the cold war/iron curtain period prior to the reunification of Germany around 1989. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XX-N3MPiw0gwww.youtube.com/watch?v=QhoXWUZI0Egwww.youtube.com/watch?v=DD6vrhAuy64Met Vladmir PUTIN once too .... in person (along with some of his diplomatic protection squad .... and which became a "really funny story") .... at the 1998 APEC Conference in AKL/NZ whilst I was undertaking "surveilance work", on the airport, on behalf of NZ´s government owned airport and airline security provided during this prestigeous regional event (can talk about it now .... couldn´t before though) Enjoy a good cold STOLICHNAYA or MOSKOVSKAYA further chilled "on the rocks" as well every once in a while .... especially during a good cold war espionage movie/documentary. Like to go there (to Russia) one day/in the near future too .... and see the Red Army perform All of this (above) is really just intended to just "set the theme/ambience" for my following presentation of "the mighty IL-62" in response to Walter´s posting (time hasn´t been on my side recently to do so sooner) .... since it seems Walter, and I, both share similar tastes in realworld aviation and in FS .... This particular simulation was produced by the PROJECT TUPOLEV team .... interestingly enough .... despite the subject aircraft actually being an Ilyushin, rather than a Tuploev aircraft type (but I´m not complaining). It first flew in 1963, and entered service with AEROFLOT during 1867. In keeping with a lot of Russian produced simulations, this one too, is a "b-e-a-u-t-y" .... especially when used with the panel, and Panel Fix, files by Cristiano "Neddu" CANUTI .... along with the SOLOVIEV engine soundpack (these engines have a "VERY DUISTINCT" tone) by Mike MAARSE .... albeit that it's also "quite a technically intense" simulation too (particularly in regard to its navigation and AP functions .... but .... which do appear to be quite well explained within its accompanying Engilsh, and Rusiian, language manuals) and which, as I implied above, is in keeping with a lot of the higher quality Russian produced simulations .... I´ve become attached to "THIS BLOODY THING" Might be because its "mysterious/impressive good looks and "PROUD" stature (without the VC10's "elegance though perhaps) .... or .... it could just be that the darned thing flies so well and sounds "GREAT" too .... OR ONCE AGAIN .... because Russian stuff of this paticular era (be it airliners, ships, or tanks) has always "FASCINATED" me "CERTAINLY" .... a very nice simulation .... and a real classic more than in the sense of its NATO code name ("CLASSIC") .... though "TECHNICALLY SPEAKING" speaking (in terms of its general panel/gauge/systems complexity) .... this's simulation (maybe) isn´t one for the faint-hearted or non-technically-minded AEROFLOT CCCP-86689 (1970's)AEROFLOT CCCP-86700 (experimental 1975)AEROFLOT CCCP-86700 (experimental 1976)AEROFLOT CCCP-86541 (1980's)AEROFLOT RA-86523 (1990's)AIR KORYO P-885AIRSTARS RA-86515AIR UKRAINE UR86135ALPHA AIRLINES RA-86130AVIANEGRO RA--86583CIVIL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION OF CHINA B-2020CSA/CHEKOVSOLVENSKI AEROLINEE OK-PBNCUBANA DE AVIACION CU-T1218 (1975)CUBANA DE AVIACION CU-T1284 (2000)DALEVIA AIRWAYS RA-86525DOMODODOVO AIRLINES RA-86519INTERAVIA RA-86451[INTERAVIA RA-86533INTERFLUG DDR-SENKAPO AIR FREIGHT RA-86126KLM/AEROFOLOT IL-62M CCCP-86689 1971KOKSHETASU AIRLINES UN-86505KRAS AIR RA-86453KRAS AIR RA-86709 (2012)LOT POLISH AIRLINES SP-LACLOT POLISH AIRLINES SP-LAALOT POLISH AIRLINES SP-LBG ("Tadeusz Kosciuszko")LUFTWAFFE 11+21MAGADAN AIRLINES RA-86507MAGADAN AIRLINES RA-86590 (weathered)MALEV HUNGARIAN AIRLINES HA-LIA (leased from AEROFLOT 1991)MCS/ROSSIYA RA-86570MOSCOW AIRWAYS RA-86515RUSSIA MILITARY TRANSPORT RA-86539RUSSIA STATE TRANSPORT AUTHORITY RA-86496RUSSIA STATE TRANSPORT AUTHORITY RA-86712RUSSIA STATE TRANSPORT AUTHORITY (Putin's Porsche) RA-86467RUSSIAN SKY AIRLINES RA-86587SAT AIRWAYS RA-86566SUDAN GOVERNMENT ST-PRATAROM YR-IRD (1970's)TAROM YR-IRE (1980's)UKRAINE GOVERNMENT UR-86528UZBEKISTAN AIRLINES UK-86573VIM AIRLINES RA-86520VIM AIRLINES (Big Red) RA-86597Mark C BOG/CO

Hi friends: Mark has a respectable fleet of IL-62s in his hangar! The PT IL 62M is a simulation easy to startup (no FE panel) but is really the Mount Everest in simulated navigation, as its navigation panel not only includes dual INS and the KLN90B also its has the NV-PB navigation system capable of flying SID and STARS and long range navigation, based on Doppler Radar navigation. It even has a facility of automated trafic circuits around an airport. The compass system can provide polar and great circle navigation. Its true that some aspects of its navigation system and AP are not very clear in the PT manual especially the transfer between short distance and long distance NV-PB navigation. I have presented an English translation of parts of the INTERFLUG manual (FZHI62) www.avsimrus.com/zip.phtml?id=54954&hl=WalterLeoand Jiri Balak made an exampleflight which is very useful to understand the NV-PB system. www.youscribe.com/catalogue/tous/loisirs-et-hobbies/sports/project-tupolev-s-ilyushin-il-62m-tutorial-flight-lkpr-uuee-531169Those who will try to fly with the NV-PB system must know (I blundered over that several times) that one must not switch for and back between the short and long distance mode as the system adds up the flight distances between the two modes. Kind regards Walter P.S.: Important: Always take off with full flaps!!!! From my experience the dynamics of the PT simulation come very close to handbook values only landing at full landing weight (105 to Aeroflot 107 to INTERFLUG) will need more speed at short final (300 against 275 km/h). The AP/FD in ILS mode is very tricky and the AP is NOT able to follow a VOR track/radial, but the FD indicates it well. The AP is capable to intercept an ILS track from 90 deg as in the real thing as long as you are away from touchdown around 30 km or more and the heading pointer of the HSI is put on the final course.

Hi friends: Some ideosyncracies of flying the (real) IL 62M: The beast had a long list of do and do nots: e.g.: do nots: Dont extend the gear or the flaps while turning, dont extend gear and flaps together. Dont use speedbrakes while turning. But elevator malfunction can be overcome by selecting spoilers which create an upward moment. Dont use speedbrakes or reversers before the nosewheel is planted on the run way. does: Load and fuel the airplane only with (the 4th) rear gear extended. (The PT simulation mimiks very well your Russian Queen of the Skys falling on her buttocks!) Take off only with full flaps landing also, only shallow pitch angels in all flight regimes, max AoA after rotation 7 deg other wise 6 deg. Calculate engine life not only with total time, also keep track of time using T.O (full) power and use of max continous ("Nominal") and respect a maximum % of both related to total time. These last restrictions hinted to underseized roller bearings (13 rollers instead the planed 26) of the engine shafts which failed in the Kuznetzo NK-8 (IL62") and Solviev D-30 (IL62M) engines with two fatal consequences (Flights LOT 7 and LOT 5055). The airlines which operated the IL62M the longest time (especially AEROFLOT and CUBANA) came to manage the flying and maintaining of the IL62M over the years very well, so the overall safety of this airliner is much better than its contemporary western counterparts. Looking at the sheer numbers of hull losses all IL 62s had 5, 1 % losses of all airplanes produced which is a third of the B-707 (16, 8%) and of the DC-8 (14, 9%) families. It’s the same as for the similar Vickers VC-10 and a third higher as for the B-747 family (3, 8%). Only the much younger designs of e.g. B 767 have a clearly lower rate of hull losses (1, 3%). In terms of fatalities the IL 62 family was also safer than contemporary western airplanes. Kind regards Walter

Thought this might interest you Walter .... CUBANA IL-62M .... introductory video for a 3 hour JUST FLIGHT presentationwww.youtube.com/watch?v=nz7MggJOlD0&feature=youtu.beQuite an interesting mode of ground steerage on the IL-62 .... seems to be connected to the yoke. Galley seems to be quite well stocked also .... I like that Mark C BOG/CO

Hi friends: 8 very good IL-62 repaints including corrected base textures are available here: www.friendlyflusi.at/index.php?page=DownloadDBView&categoryID=26Pipe the author of these repaints has also very good Tu-154s 134 An24 and Yak 42 in his "hangar". A visit is worthwile. The funny tiller on the yoke of the IL62 is a also present in the IL-18. Thanks for the link to the video, it is available a long version with an interview with the crew giving a lot of interesting details and more views of the cockpit, which represents the last development of the IL-62M with triple (?) INS and double GPS and no NV-PB any more: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR7QAU96F-gKind regards Walter

Hi friends: A correction: In the IL62M the FD needle does NOT point to a VOR track, it is only visible on the HSI and on the ADI´s course indicator. Pardon! But the FD points to an ILS and LOC course, the AP follows both with the function "landing". In other Russian simulations like the Tu-154s the FD points to all radio navigations selected and also to the NVU courses. Allways depends on the AP installed. Kind regards Walter

Some AEROFLOT IL-62´s "really did" support KLM ROYAL DUTCH AIRLINES titles during the early 1970´s .... KLM/AEROFOLOT IL-62M CCCP-86689 1971This came about as the result of a joint partnership between the 2 airlines over the Tokyo/Moscow/Amsterdam route between 1971 and 1972 In fact a total of 9 AEROFLOT IL-62´s supported this particular service .... .... as did 2 aircraft also during a similar JAPAN AIR LINE/AEROFLOT agreement over the Tokyo/Moscow route during 1969. The aircraft involved in these arrangements were ss follows .... CCCP-86677 operated jointly with JAL during July 1969 CCCP-86682 operated jointly with JAL during July 1969 .... and with KLM during April 1971 CCCP-86684 operated jointly with KLM from October 1971 CCCP-86652 operated jointly with KLM from April 1971 to May 1971 CCCP-86653 operated jointly with KLM from April 1971 to August 1971 CCCP-86654 operated jointly with KLM during October 1971 CCCP-86655 operated jointly with KLM from April 1971 to November 1971 CCCP-86689 operated jointly with KLM during December 1971 (an IL-62M) CCCP-86690 operated jointly with KLM during December 1971 CCCP-86691 operated jointly with KLM from January 1972 to November 1972 Mark C BOG/CO

Hi friends: The JAL-AEROFLOT cooperation operated Tu-114s, even JAL at that time already operated DC-8s. " Between 1967 and 1969 JAL had an agreement with Aeroflot to operate a joint service between Tokyo and Moscow using a Soviet Tupolev Tu-114. The flight crew included one JAL member, and the cabin crew had five members each from Aeroflot and JAL. The weekly flight started in April 1967; in May the schedule was 10 hr 35 min Moscow to Tokyo and 11 hr 25 min to return." according to Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Airlines#/media/File:Aeroflot_Tupolev_Tu-114_JAL_livery_APM.jpgKind regards Walter
