Hi freinds:
My omission the IL 62 M had the Solovev 30 KU with a fan diameter of 1455 mm the Tu-134 had the D-30 series 1-3 with a fan of 1055 mm diameter.
My point was that also low bypass engines like the NK 8-4 could be used for long distance flying but hauling lower payloads.
In the Tu-154 where in version B2 NK 8´s where used and in the M-model the D-30 KU-154 the maximum range penalty for the NK 8 equipped B2 was around 700 km.
But what the NK-8s and also D-30 KU really plagued were the inadeqaut roller bearings leading to deadly accidents for LOT airliners but also due to sloppy maintanence.
According to some former INTERFLUG pilots the D-30s of the Tu-134 were a constant problem, they had to cruise at very low Mach numbers to save engine life.
Kind regards
Walter
P.S.: The engine`s diameter is also the reason why there is no real plain IL-62 for FS available only the IL-62M.

Such a shame that the D-30 suffered this issue.... and the NK8 as well.

Looking at the specs on jet-engine.net, you could think of the Kuznetsov NK-8 as a JT3Dski while the Soloviev D-30 was a JT8Dski: the D-30K variants (the Il-62M's D-30KU, the Il-76's D-30KP and the Tu-154M's D-30KU-154) were big-fan variants comparable to the JT8D-200 series, but with an even greater increase in thrust. In fact I'm not sure the 26,400 lb thrust of the D-30KP was matched by any Western civilian low-bypass turbofan...
