I've covered Erebus quite extensively within my following linked posting .... tonymadgehjg.proboards.com/thread/7426/air-new-zealand-dc10-digestThe verdict is still hotly contested today (vociferous argument for, and against, the allegation of pilot error) .... 40 years after the event .... BUT .... what I've compiled is factual and based on the best/most reliable of known (as well, as a number of lesser known too) circumstances which conspired to make this accident inevitable .... the flight was effectively doomed before it ever left AKL. Within my above linked thread you'll find the best of available documentary coverage .... including a "scientific and psychological analysis" of why what was there to be seen .... was not/simply could not be seen .... due to the illusionary effect/s of "sector white out" in polar conditions. It's a very hard concept for some to grasp, but, the accident (as has been proven) occurred in clear air and not as a result of the aircraft being flown in cloud or otherwise impaired visibility. Also included are links to a 2-part NZ produced dramatized docu-drama about the investigation by the Royal Commission Of Inquiry into this disaster .... and which is also very well, and factually, presented too. It was s an "APPALLING AFFAIR" and one which still angers many of us even today .... 40 years later. BUT .... it also needs to be understood too that the airline .... back then .... was a state owned enterprise (it's not today) .... run by government appointees whom were answerable to the government of NZ .... and among whom the then PM was also none other than the airlines principle shareholder. The Hon Justice Peter MAHON pulled absolutely no punctures when he quite succinctly summed everything up within the report he released back to the government during 1980 .... as follows .... "The palpably false sections of evidence I heard could not have been the result of mistake or faulty recollection. They originated, I am compelled to say, in a pre-conceived plan of deception. They were very clearly part of an attempt to conceal a series of disaterous administrative blunders. I am forced reluctantly to say I have listened to an orhistrated litany of lies".And he additionally summarized .... "In my opinion the Captain, nor the F/O, nor any of the F/E´s made any error that contributed to this disaster. They were not responsible for its occurrence. The single dominant and effective cause of the disaster was the mistake by those airline officials who programmed the aircraft to fly directly at Mount Erebus and omitted to tell the aircrew. That mistake is directly attributable, not so much to the persons who made it, but to the incompetent administrative airline procedures which made the mistake possible".Attempts were later made by "certain individuals" to overturn findings of the RCOI .... with appeals going through the highest courts in NZ and as far as the Privy Council too and whom, without overturning the RCOI findings, commented equally succintly as follows .... "It is an understandable weakness of human nature on the part of airline management responsible for flight operations that they should shrink from acknowledging, even to themselves, that what they did, or failed to do, should be the cause of so horrendous a disaster". It's fair to say matters are still as "delicate" now .... as they ever were back in 1979/80 .... especially for those personally affected or whom, like me, "dodged the bullet" on November 28th 1979. It's also equally important to understand that ANZ, today, has evolved into an entirely different company .... as one of the worlds most "highly regarded" international airlines, as it now enters its 79th year of operations (1940 - 2019).
