The fact that the aircraft was ordered, built, and painted into CHINA AIRLINES late 1970's era livery (which is all entirely true) justifies it being done .... "IF" it appeals to any of our painters to do so. There "is" a "good/bettr" photo (than the above) of it on PP87 in Terry WADDINGTON's book "McDONNELL-DOUGLAS DC-10 - Great Airliners Volume 6".The aircraft was C/N 46921 L/N 214 F/F July 10th 1975. Ordered by CHINA AIRLINES (N8704Q) but not taken up. Re-registered N54640 to McDONNELL-DOUGLAS - October 1975 and stored at Yuma, Arizona, USA. Sold to BRITISH CALEDONIAN AIRWAYS (G-BEBM "Robert Burns - The Scottish Bard") February 23rd 1977. To BRITISH AIRWAYS (G-BEBM "Sherwwod Forrest") followin B-C AL/BA merger April 14th 1988. Sold to BANK OF JAPAN July 1991 and leased back to BRITISH AIRWAYS. Sold to JEWEL ASSOCIATES February 1997 .... and leased back to BRITISH AIRWAYS until October 24th 1998. Converted to a DC-10-30F July 1999. Sold to FINOVA CAPITAL CORPORATION (N608GC) July 2nd 1999 .... leased to GEMINI AIR CARGO ("Chase") July 2nd 1999 .... later renaned "Noah" .... then later renmed "Peter. Lased to DAS AIR CAROO (5X-BON) December 22 2003 Sold to KELOWNA FLIGHTCRAFT (C-GKFA) September 3008. Scrapped at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada during 2015. Mark C AKL/NZ

Thanks for the confirmation Mark Though I do wonder why it got cancelled at that point when it was pretty much almost ready to be delivered.

A story I recall hearing about it during the late 70's (and it's funny how this's stuck in my mind all these years since) is the airline simply couldn't afford to operate it .... there was a number of airlines, and aircraft, caught up in situations like this due to market conditions during that period.
Probably more likely to be a case of them possibly not being able to finance it .... than not being able to operate it.
Peter might know a bit more.

Nothing shocking, amazing, or surprising about it at all.
It's called "STORAGE" .... and it's "not" uncommon .... even now.
Places like Yuma, Marana, Mojave, and even Tucson too, aren't just grave yards where aircraft go to die/be canibalised .... they're also storage facilities.
When a deal like that over CAL DC-10 goes "BUNG" there's obviously legal ramifications .... between the airline, the manufacturer, and the banks/financiers too. Nothing can be done with the aircraft until the situation's amicably resolved to the satisfaction of all parties concerned .... and MDC obviously didn't need, or want it, sitting around Long Beach taking up valuable space there (aircraft purchases can also be incredibly "political", so, out of public sight and in the desert, is also out of public mind too) since they're a business and not a parking lot. Likely getting a dispensation to fly it from Long Beach to Yuma for storage was probably all that could be done with the aircraft .... and it's also the "cheapest" form of storage available too whilst the legal wrangling was going on. MDC undoubtedy "did/lost" a fair bit of dough ($) on that particular deal .... and B-CAL probably picked up a very cheap/reasonably priced aeroplane as the result of it all.

Hello, although this is my first post here on these forums I have been a lurker for sometime so I might make a few mistakes in wording this I was doing some research a few weeks back and came across a couple of posts mentioning that China Airlines had a DC-10 on order which was built and painted, registered N54640 (I think?) however information was that the Taiwan government didn't approve of the purchase and cancelled the order and the aircraft went to British Caledonian Hi there, I realize this is an old post, just came across it and can add my photo of N54643 at Long Beach on 17Feb 1975. imgur.com/6ntltekI also noted N8704Q that same day, wrote it down as China Airlines(NTU) but made no note of the colour scheme it was in, although if I remember correctly it was all white, I suspect this because I specifically noted N54643 as being in full c/s, and yes both went to BCal hth Mark

Not sure what connection, if any, your making between the two .... or if you're merely mentioning having sighted both aircraft at MDC, Long Beach, USA, at the same time (I suspect) .... but simply for the record ....
N54643 C/N # 46949 L/N # 242
McDONNELL-DOUGLAS (N54643) October 17th 1974 .... ordered by CHINA AIRLINES but not taken up (stored at Yumma, Arizona, USA in CAL livery until 1977). Delivered to BRITISH CALEDONIAN AIRWAYS (G-BEBL "Sir Alexander Flemming - The Scottish Challenger") March 31st 1977. Transferred to BRITISH AIRWAYS (renamed "Forrest Of Dean") April 14th 1988. Sold to INDUSTRIAL BANK OF JAPAN July 1991 .... and leased back to BRITISH AIRWAYS. Sold to STANSBOROUGH INVESTMENTS LTS February 1997 .... and leased back to BRITISH AIRWAYS. Withdrawn from service and returned to STANSBOROUGH INVESTMENTS then stored at Manchester February 1999. Converted to "DC-10-30F" specification January 2002. Re-registeres LX-TLE for lease to CARGO LION (no date) but not taken up. Sold to POP FIVE LTD April 18th 2001 .... and leased to VARIG BRAZILIAN AIRLINES (PP-VQY). Transferred to VARIG LOGISTICS January 2002. Sold to KELOWNA FLIGFHTCRAFT (C-GKFB) September 2008. Withdrawn from service and stored at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada June 2014 .... and scrapped at Hamilton during June 2016.
And earlier related within this thread in regard to the following aircraft .... albeit with information that's possibly "a little" more precise ....
N8704Q C/N # 46921 L/N # 214
MCDONNELL- DOUGLAS (N8704Q) July 10th 1975 .... ordered by CHINA AIRLINES but not taken up. McDONNELL-DOUGLAS (N54640) .... re-registered. Delivered to BRITISH CALEDONIAN AIRWAYS (G-BEBM "Robert Burns - The Scottish Bard" .... first Dc-10 to be delivered to B-CAL) February 23rd 1977. Transferred to BRITISH AIRWAYS (renamed "Sherwood Forrest") April 14th 1988. Sold to INDUSTRIAL BANK OF JAPAN July 1991 .... and leased back to BRITISH AIRWAYS. Sold to JEWEL ASSOCIATES February 1997 .... and leased back to BRITISH AIRWAYS. Returned to JEWEL ASSOCIATES October 24th 1998. Converted to "DC-10-30F" specification July 1999. Sold to FINOVA CAPITAL CORPORATION (N608GC) July 2nd 1999 .... and leased to GEMINI AIR CARGO (named "Chase"). Renamed "Noah" .... then later renamed "Peter" in service with GEMINI AIR CRGO, Returned to FINOVA CAPITAL CORPORATION December 18th 2003. Leased to DAIRO AIR SERVICE (5X-BON) December 2003 .... and operated for TOBRUK AIR from March 2006. Returned to FINOVA CAPITAL CORPORATION (re-registered N811SL) and stored at Marana, Arizona, USA November 1st 2007. Re-registered PR-LGO .... but not taken up by VARIG LOGISTICS. Sold to KELOWNA FLIGHTCRAFT (C-GKFA) September 2008 .... and scrapped at Hamilton, Ontario, Canada during August 2015.
2 DC-10-30's were ordered by CAL .... whom became MDC's 34th customer for the type. The first aircraft (N54643) .... a white tail originally built for ATLANTIS AIRWAYS .... supported CHINA AIRLINES livery, but, the Taiwanese government refused to sanction its purchase prior to delivery and the aircraft was then stored at Yuma, Arizona, USA (I do have reference imagery of this aircraft taken there at the time) for a period almost 2 years. It was eventually sold to B-CAL. The 2nd aircraft .... another white tail in MDC storage and presumably N8704Q .... never supported CAL livery but was also acquired by B-CAL.

"APPRECIATE" that .... but .... as you started out by saying yesterday this's indeed an "old thread" .... dating back to mid 2019. Your "intent" .... other than mentioning possibly having seen one of the (or both) aircraft wasn't really all that clear .... especially since imagery's already been presented of the subject aircraft (some of which was earlier removed by me for reason of copy right objection back in 2019), therefore the discussion's already been had, the texture's long since been done .... and uploaded .... and where it still remains publicly accessible today and for all whom might want to enjoy it My own "intent" was simply to reconfirm details for the liveried aircraft .... whilst also confirming those for the other too (now corrected from earlier presented within this thread and in accordance with further historic research) .... based on the 2 registrations you identified within your posting (given you did mention one, or the other, aircraft might have been a white tail at the time you supposedly saw it) .... and nothing more or less than that MRC AKL/NZ
