Just watched the news and video reports of the White Island Volcano eruption which resulted in the unfortunate loss of life of several tourists. It's a risky business getting close to active volcanoes. Herman

As I said yesterday .... I think the nuts's going to hit the fan over this recent event. There's already "talk" of a criminal investigation .... with the possibility "MANSLAUGHTER" charges pending. "IF" Geophysics have assessed any elevated risk of eruption and failed to communicate that to tour operaors then .... ? .... And/Or "IF" there's no oligation on the part of Geophysics to do so then .... ? .... And/Or "IF" tour operators haven't checked-in (not sure if they're supposed or if they simply operate on the basis of official risk assessment notifications .... not sure how this system works) "prior to selling and embarking on their trips", or, have otherwise acted regrdless of advice/recommendations then .... ? A lot of links in this chain .... with (possible) systematic responsibilities that've either been non-existent or not implemented at all, so someone, somewhere, "is" going to end up "really going for the high jump" over all I suspect .... and in the meantime I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if a number of people start running for cover. Latest news .... THE DEAD AND/OR UNACCOUNTED FOR www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12292595POWER OF THE 2 BLASTS (the helecopter is completely "F@#$ED").... www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12292639DELAYED VICTIM RECOVERY www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12292536&&ref=recommendedREPERCUSSIONS (premium news) www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12292665As I mentioned yesterday also .... this/what's happened recently may result in the end of tourist trips to White Island. That's going to severely impact the ecnomy of Whakatane (pronounced FAR-KAR-TAR-NAE) region .... since it's almost entirely dependeant on tourism to survive .... White Island trips being its main stay. The operations of WHITE ISLAND TOURS has now been suspended .... "indefinitely". Mark C AKL/NZ

Death toll here has now risen to 8 of the 40 odd people whom were able to be taken off White Island following Monday's eruption .... all of whom were severely injured 8 more are still unaccounted for .... so the death toll will inevitably rise to 16 .... although more yet may succumb to their injuries. "An attempt" will be made by the NZ POLICE today (is currently underway as I type these words) to recover the bodies of those remaining on the island .... drone surveillance and "very brief" aerial passes (when either have been possible between geologic activity) having pin-pointed where most of these remain .... www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12293333The reason no attempt/s have been made at body recovery before now is .... (a) the elevated risk/geological activity on the island since Monday's eruption (this volcano is unstable .... it'll spit and fart a couple of times every few years or so .... then quieten down to nothing but a smoulder .... and then "BLOW" again without warning) .... and (b) drone recovered air samples have determined that prior to now the air quality on/over the island is so toxic/acidic following Monday's eruption that any attempt at body recovery will likely only endanger the retrievers. The safety of those tasked to retrieve human remains must, and has, taken absolute priority before now. Of the 40 odd survivors that were hospitalized the vast majority have been horrifically burned .... and among those injured that have since died the magnitude of their burns and injuries were so severe that body identification has been rendered difficult/impossible without dependence upon DNA processes. Whilst NZ medical system does have a world class burns unit .... these units, due to the countries small population size, are dispersed within various hospital around the country .... given that no one particular hospital has the capacity to be able to cope with all of the injured. Most of the Australian injured have been gotten sufficiently stable to be moved .... and have been medevaced back to Australia (very close to NZ) where they'll continue to undergo major surgical treatment over "a very long period". In the meantime .... and as I last reported .... the question/s of culpability "ARE/WILL" be pursued (heads are bound to roll among individuals and within both departments as well companies too) and which will undoubtedly result in some massive fines being imposed along with hefty compensation pay outs as well .... given the number of lives that've now been "physically" (if not emotionally too) destroyed. Thank you so much Mark for keeping us updated. My heart goes out to those who were there, regardless of loss of life or just escaped. That experience will never be forgotten by those that were there. Having experienced Mt. St. Helens here in the USA many years ago, I know what they are going thru. Blessings to all. and thank you again Mark. Denny Hayward aka Falcon

6 bodies were located and retrieved by the NZ POLICE from White Island early last Friday morning. 2 persons (obviously deceased also) remain unaccounted for though .... their bodies having not (yet) been recovered .... searches having been frustrated by toxic conditions on, and around, the island .... and which are also permeating the sea, and impacting marine life too within close proximity to the island. This's an "extremely difficult" recovery operation .... the like of which has never been undertaken, or previously needed to be undertaken in the past, anywhere in NZ. The official death toll has now risen to 16 persons .... 2 more having succumbed since last Friday .... and will obviously rise to 18 with the 2 persons (still) unaccounted for. Many others remain in hospital (both in NZ .... and in Australia among those medevacked/re-patronated there last week) .... an whom remain in "critical condition" and may yet succumb also.
