BLOODSTOCK AIR SERVICES B727-25F VH-LAP "Phar Lap" (1984).
BLOODSTOCK AIR SERVICES was formed during 1983 .... and based at MEL, Australia. It intended to specialize in the air transportation of bloodstock/horses .... within Australia and across the Tasman to New Zealand .... and which, at the time (to and from NZ at least) was a lucrative trade mostly handled by AIR PEGASUS in AKL. The company didn't last very long though and was gone before the end of 1984.
This particular aircraft (C/N # 18270, L/N # 79) first flew from BOEING/Seattle on September 25th 1964 .... registered N8119N. It was delivered to EASTERN AIR LINES on October 7th 1964 .... and with whom it served until September 1st 1982 when it was sold to MONARCH AVIATION and converted to a pure freighter during December 1982. It was leased to BLOODSTOCK AIR SERVICES from March 6th 1983 .... and entered the Australian civil air register as VH-LAP (named "Phar Lap" .... after an Australian thoroughbred race horse which achieved notable fame and success throughout the late 1920's/early 1930's) on April 15th 1983. This aircraft was also dry leased to TRANS AUSTRALIA AIRLINES from June 9th 1983 until March 30th 1984 .... and operated its first revenue service for the airline between MEL and PER (as TN 2340) on June 9th 1983. It was also utilized by ANSETT AIR FREIGHT too .... on the airlines MEL/PER/MEL services during 1983. On March 30th 1984 AH-LAP operated its last revenue for TAA .... between MEL and PER as TN 2340. Due to BLOODSTOCK's financial insecurity the aircraft was grounded at PER on March 30th 1984. It was then sold to ANSETT AIR FREIGHT on August 12th 1984 .... and ferried between PER and MEL but never entered service with the airline and was stored at MEL until late 1984. VH-LAP was then ferried from MEL to SEA (via NAN/Fiji, PPG/American Samoa, ITO/Hawaii, and SFO) on November 25th 1984 .... under the command of captains J.DOWARD, B.LAKE, and assisted by F/E A.CLARKE and G/E A.VARRENSBURG. This aircraft was then cancelled from the Australian civil aircraft register on December 12th 1984 .... and entered the US civil air register as N8119N. It was leased to IASCO .... and sub-leased to FLYING TIGER LINE from December 20th 1984 .... and then returned to IASCO during December 1985. It was next leased to SPIRIT OF AMERICA AIRLINES from January 1986 .... and sub-leased to CF AIR FREIGHT from October 1986 until September 24th 1988 .... then returned to ANSETT INDUSTRIES AUSTRALIA and placed in storage at Goodyear, Arizona, USA, from March 1989. This aircraft was then leased to AEROLINEAS LATINAS from May 25th 1990 until July 1991 .... and entered the Venezuelan civil air as YV-728C. It was then leased to ILPO AIRLINES CARGO from July 20 1991 .... and re-registered YV-448 on September 23rd 1991 .... then cancelled from the Venezuelan civil air register and returned to ANSETT LEASING during December 1992. It entered the US civil air register again as N5111Y on December 17th 1992 .... and was leased to LINEAS AEREAS SURAMERICANAS COLOMBIA and re-registered HK-3814-X (named "Skipper") and with whom it served until 2003. This aircraft was offered for sale by COMMERCIAL TURBINE SERVICES from August 6th 2003 .... marketed as being "Stage 3 noise compliant, but, remained at BOG as was eventually canibalized for spares.
