Few will likely ever have heard of "K2000 AIRLINES" .... and although it was a NZ based operator (headed by Jeff MATHEWS and Ewan WILSON .... the latter personality of former KIWI INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES fame) few in NZ will likely remember or have ever heard of this particular carrier either. The airline sourced its aircraft .... a B737-400 wet leased from Turkey's PEGASUS AIRLINES .... and intended to exploit the December 1999 through March 2000 summer period (during which demand for both trans-Tasman and South Pacific travel traditionally peaks .... and with much higher air fares as a result) operating SYD, BNE, and RAR services from AKL, HLZ, and DUD, by offering airfares "somewhat more competitive" than any of the long-established mainstream competition within both NZ and Australia, whilst also intending to expand its operations to other NZ provincial cities in order to offer international air service opportunities that had not been previously available. Now then .... there's common a saying in life that "if something sounds/seems too good to be true, then, that's often indeed the case, and that something is often therefore best avoided or otherwise ignored" .... only some of those whom did opt to exploit what K2000 was marketing ended up regretting doing so due to the havoc that followed the airlines collapse/decision to suddenly pull the plug on all of its services .... after little more than 5 weeks of (unsuccessful) operations. To be successful .... any budget air carrier needs to be supported by the market within which its based or is operating, and realize consistently high yields on services both to and from wherever it's flying, and still then be able to survive when the more powerful and long-established main stream competition reduce airfares to match .... or even better .... any budget carriers offerings ..... all of which is "a particularly hard call" within markets as small as NZ, Australia, and the South Pacific, most of which are generally "seasonal". It's also fine to consider operating services from provincial centers that lack international air services too, but in most cases, the reason such prospective destinations have previously lacked such air services is primarily due to there being insufficient demand in these regions to be able to sustain profitable air services to start with .... or these destinations lack the necessary infrastructure in order to be able to adequately support such operations .... or both. Each of these factors came into play and contributed to the failure of K2000 AIRLINES .... and which wasn't in the least bit aided either by public fear (at the time) concerning the perceived impact of the Y2K computer bug. Here's the full K2000 AIRLINES story .... composed by a Catholic priest (Father Steve LOWE) whom is also an aviation photography colleague of mine, in NZ, as well as being a very highly respected fellow aviation historian too .... K2000 AIRLINES3rdlevelnz.blogspot.com/2020/05/k2000-y2k-airline.html"FREEDOM AIR INTERNATIONAL" was the budget/no-frills wing of AIR NEW ZEALAND .... established during late 1995 under the paper-thin disguise of its subsidiary MOUNT COOK AIRLINES .... and to essentially knock KIWI INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES out of the market and which it successfully did during 1996. FREEDOM AIR remained in service until March 2008 when it was voluntarily liquidated by AIR NEW ZEALAND .... having operated A320-200, B737-200, B737-300, and B757-200 aircraft. Again .... Father Steve LOWE records the airlines operational history equally as well as I can ever relate it per his following presentation .... FREEDOM AIR INTERNATIONAL 3rdlevelnz.blogspot.com/2020/01/freedom-air-great-airscape.htmlFather Steve LOWE maintains his own NZ civil aviation history website at the following address .... 3RD LEVEL NEW ZEALAND3rdlevelnz.blogspot.com/Mark C AKL/NZ
