Hi friends:
The miracle airline MEXICANA of the 70s was an airline operating exclusively B-727 (the 4 COMET 4C were retired 1971) and wrote ten years positive results also thanks to MEXICANAs then director general Manuel Sosa de la Vega.
I don't know if he was behind the DC-10 project but strange with that wonderful airplane the downfall of MEXICANA started, maybe the bird was too big and its economic handling too complex for MEXICANA not forgetting the unnecessary competition with AEROMEXICO, which also had to buy DC-10s. Would be something similar as with AUSTRIAN wich evolved from a one type airline (DC-9 MD-80) for short and medium destinations to a hotchpotch of MD-80, A 320, A 340 A 330 B 767 and B 777, flying to Australia, Thailand, China, Africa and USA, besides their traditional profitabel routes to Europe and especially Eastern Europe. Part of that mess was the consequence of a much too expensive buy-out of LAUDA AIR to get rid of homegrown competition, capitalizing on Formula One Star NIKI LAUDAs name and his political connections. And politics could not sum up one to one i.e. helping the privately owned LAUDA-AIR against the state-owned AUSTRIAN AIRLINES was "more of a crime it was a failure". Strict cost saving on the once highly appreciated service quality (once of both AUSTRIAN and LAUDA!) did not bring back black numbers on the yearly account 2008 and after a possibly faked bidding process it was "sold" to LUFTHANSA.
Kind regards
Walter
P.S.: Regarding AUSTRIAN hotchpotch: Some Fokkers, CRJs DHCs with props were also included, "acquired" from TYROLEAN and RHEINTALFLUG. That was part of AUSTRIANS presumed strategy of "integration of the airline activity to give better service to regional centres like Innsbruck". In reality the owners (private companies) wanted and achieved to shoulder their losses on the taxpayers. Also, MEXICANA had some Fokkers and CRJs under its brand "MEXICANA CLICK" and changed to AIRBUS from 318 up to 330 but also flirted again with BOEING acquiring 10 B 757-200 and some 767 200, 300 both in the ER version.
These hotchpotches are for me a clear sign of no existing long-term strategies of the entire companies.
