Happy to see the David Maltby Classic British Jetliners represented at HJG. The following images will show the first trans Atlantic passenger flight by a Jetliner, of the Comet 4 from London Heathrow to New York's Idelwild Airport on October 4th, 1958. An intermediate fuel stop was required at Gander, Newfoundland before the flight continued to New York. The BOAC Comet 4 G-APOA on the Ramp at Heathrow.( Not sure if this was the registration of the aircraft that did the actual flight.) Departing from RWY 26R. Over the English country side and climbing to FL 310. Over the Atlantic enroute to Gander. Another BOAC Comet 4 appears to be following us. Landing at Gander for a fuel stop. Only necessary when flying eastbound against the headwinds. On the ramp at Gander. Climbing to cruise altitude enroute to New York. On short final to RWY 31 at Idlewild. Panel works good in FSX. Approach flown manually as localizer on HSI was not giving proper indication. Taxiing to the Gate\Ramp of the International Terminal. Herman

Hi Herman: Nice pics and nice flight, thanks! Regarding Comets ADI and HSI: In your screenshot ADI and HSI are programmed on NAV2, and on the ILS indicator the ILS is shown as from NAV1. To work on HSI and ADI the ILS should be selected on NAV1 and the HSI turned to heading and track of the ILS. On the RMI an ILS will not be shown (as it was in the real Comet). The ADI will only work with the ILS if "beam" and "glidepath" appear on top of the ADI. Besides that, it is not easy to read the indications of the ADI. In the photo: ILS MMUN RWY 12 on NAV1 111.10, 122 dig on the OBS and heading, NAV2 CUN VOR 113,4 122 dig on the OBS and heading. The ADI will show the ILS only if the AP is active, and "BEAM" and "GLIDE" selected even if the AP is not engaged. For my part I select on both NAVs the ILS frequency and select for both the track and heading on the HSI. Then you can see more clearly the ILS situation on the ILS/NAV indicator also. This was behind my comments about the difficulties of the ADI, HSI complex of the Comet in comparison with other panels. Ok: My way: LOC intercept Intercepting glideslope: AP off Beam and glide selected for ADI: ADI is difficult to read, but on shortest final the ADI does not command a significant pitch up. Touchdown were it should be. Kind regards Walter

Nathan......thank you for your comments. Yes, I try to incorporate the calclassic AI period traffic wherever I can.
Walter.......thank you also for your comments and the description and accompanying images showing your procedure for setting up for the ILS autopilot approach.
During my approach I was a bit confused as to why the localizer needle on the HSI was not agreeing with the other ILS instrument.

Hi friends:
The disconcerting is: The HSI compass card does not turn with the compass, the pilot has to do that by selecting the track by the left red button of the HSI. The right black button selects the desired heading shown by the simple hand, the actual heading is presented by the hand with the round peak. For NAV1 and NAV2 one has to "programme" the HSI separately. This has also a nice benefit: Follow by AP with NAV1 a radial to intercept on NAV2 another radial, so it's only a question of switching between the two navs at the appropriate time. Soviet airliners had similar systems mind-boggling "Westeners" thinking it's like flying a B 737.
The HSI shows the Nav selected by the switch right of the DME indicators, the ILS gauge shows the other Nav. You had selected NAV2 with a track of 315 dig and desired heading of 285 dig for the HSI showing the actual heading of 315 dig. The ILS gauge showed NAV 1 with the ILS frequency on track a little low as on shortest final is normal.
Kind regards
Walter
