Merry Christmas and a happy forthcoming New Year to everyone here!
I'm looking to simulate flights and whatnot, particularly what the United Kingdom's Bomber Command Main Force may have done in a late 50s' "Hot War" (yes, I know the late 50's tensions in the Cold War were generally not that bad as say, 1962). I'm aiming to fly the Vickers Valiant in particular, and I am wondering if the now freeware Alphasim Valiant B1 is good for flying (as many years have passed and I do not know if there are better Valiant models around). I'm also looking for updated sounds (my download has no "unique" engine sounds) and perhaps an updated panel and FD. Sounds are first because I understand panels and FD as being harder to accurately simulate. I'm also looking for good nuclear explosion effects, and I believe that there are some around as even from a review article from 2004 states that, "nuclear weapon burst effects for FS2004 are available from popular freeware download sites for those who feel the urge to make the Cold War hot." I ask these questions at this forum as the posters here are very trustable when it comes to flying period jet aircraft...
Regards, Andrew

Anyone's welcome to advise in regard to this query .... BUT .... I feel your query's probably better posted on the CBFS (CLASSIC BRITISH FLIGHT SIM) forum Andrew. Interest in the aircraft types. and era/period, you mention is probably more abundant over there .... I feel/suspect .... www.cbfsim.co.uk/CBFS_HOME.phpMark C AKL/NZ

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the recommendation. I've put a request there and hoping for a quick response.

That's probably the better way to go Andrew .... only because HJG is best engineered to advise in regard to the aircraft types it's produced or otherwise offers.
As I said earlier though this query remains "open to advice here" also

Hi friends:
At one of these days in octubre 1962 I was walking in Salzburg to my political science class. This class was held by Franz Martin Schmölz O.P., who was beside being professor at the university of Salzburg was rated as a top adviser of the Austrian government. It was one of these warm and clear days which were created by strong southerly winds. At that time, I was very interested in aviation already. In the news at noon there was some talking about discussions between USA and Russia about something related to Cuba. During my walk I looked up to the sky and seeing 4 contrails coming from west going to east and not as usually North South. When the contrails where above me the airplane was visible being not an airliner but a glistering triangle with 4 engines. Me "GOD I" thought " it's a Convair B-58 the most advanced doomsday machine of the USA". And now being exactly above the B-58 sharply banked left did a 180 and went back to where it came from. To my relief nothing did fall out of the airplane, Armageddon was not yet actual.
When my class started Franz Martin Schmölz began white in the face and with a broken voice told us: "Please pray with me for peace, the situation is very tense and a nuclear war can start at every moment." Then he started to explain the situation and men of good will on every side would be necessary to avoid a global catastrophe which could lead to the end of mankind.
This is my concept of the Cuba crises.
Some years ago, the Russians could talk about what was then still a state secret. It came out they had built up the capability to attack the whole continental USA with nuclear warheads, their commanders were entitled to use these weapons if attacked without further order from Moscow. Their submarines were armed with nuclear torpedos capable to destroy an aircraft carrier group at one shot. In one case only one officer vetoed the actual use of the nuclear torpedo before confirming with Moscow that war had already broken out. Armageddon was really close.
And I am happy being still able to write this story.
Kind regards
Walter
