Is there anything I can do that will make FS (2004 or X) load faster?

Well ....
What gives you the impression that FS loading slowly .... I mean what sort of time duration are we talking about here.
What have you got installed that may be impacting loading times .... for example the complexity some FS utilities, sceneries, and panels (like our BAe 146) can all reduce FS loading and exit times .... which is not really all that uncommon a phenomenon.
And what are your system specifications too ?

Yes. remove the number of aircraft and sceneries FS have to load.
By constantly applying more and more aircraft, the time to load continues to grow as well. Hatch down some of those you seldom or rarely use. Same with Sceneries. "un-activate" those you don't use at the time. .... Defrag, defrag and.... defrag ;-) That could do something.
And btw. don't use the computer on your birthday ;-)

Defrag your hard drive, run FSX/FS9, then defrag again. Eliminate unused aircraft and sceneries. Those are the two that will give the most return.

Btw. If you're running FS9 and have a lot AI-traffic. be sure that all your AI aircraft are indeed AI-aircraft and does not show in the menu. If they do use a tool like aired or the like to set the aircraft-type correct. (There is a specific tool that does that to a multiple selection, but the name has slipped my mind as I'm only on FSX now) In FSX you just rename the panel-folder: no panel folder = no show in the menu.
If all you AI-traffic has been showing in the menu, this particular change will hugely improve loading time.

Is there any way to install aircraft in FS on a per-user basis? My FS2004 is currently bursting with planes, because my father likes prop-driven aircraft while I prefer jets...

Well .... you put'em there old son ! ;D Speaking of my permanent HJG fleet .... I install only 1 of each aircraft base pack .... into which I then match 1 only texture for each model, panel, or sound variation that may apply within each aircraft type base pack. What you can consider doing (and this's what I do in respect of aircraft I like .... but .... fly much less often) is create a folder/storage hangar right outside of FS .... maybe even on another drive. Inside this folder keep all your less used aircraft .... in the form of ready to use base packs complete with their respective models, textures, panels/gauges, sounds, and FDE .... then manually drag and drop these in and out of FS as you desire using or withdrawing them. That's what I've been doing for years ! Mark

An alternate suggestion if you have the room is a second FS install, preferably on a different drive. That way you can set one up for props and one for jets. I use a similar setup, except that I have three installs total: FSX for modern aircraft (1980+), one for props and early jets (1946-1970s) and one for pre-WWII only. Keeps each install trim and efficient.
