On "MAY 30TH 1958" DC8 SHIP ONE N8008D performed its maiden flight from Long Beach California .... and a legend in civil aviation was born !
First flight of the DC8 was crewed by Douglas Aircraft Company chief test pilot Hiemie HEIMERDINGER, co-pilot William MAGRUDER, flight engineer Paul PATTON, and flight test systems engineer Bob RIZER.
T/O weight was set at 198,000 LBS and the aircraft was rotated at 128 KTS after a T/O roll of 3,250 FT. The noise was excrutiating as the aircraft climbed away .... ahead of 4 thick plumes of black exhaust smoke .... all characteristic of early water/methanol injected turbojet engines of the 1950's. This first ever DC8 T/O was witnessed by some 95,000 spectators. SHIP ONE then performed a shakedown flight of 2 hours 7 minutes over the Pacific ocean .... during which the aircraft climbed to 21,000 FT and achieved a speed of some 350 KTS prior to landing at Edwards AFB California from where all future flight testing was conducted in advance of the DC8's FAA certification.
This month marks the "50TH/GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY" of the first flight of the DC8 .... "MAY 30TH 1958 - MAY 30TH 2008".
It's incredible that a jetliner design conceived and built during the 1950's and 1960's remains in service today .... successfully competing with modern/advanced jet equipment .... most of which were aimed at DC8/B707 replacement having both entered service and long since been retired whilst the DC8 continues to soldier on.
In recognition this significant achievement by the DC8 I'm opening a special thread on the screenshots page of our HJG forum ("HJG SCREENSHOTS GALLERY") entitled ....
"DC8 - CELEBRATING 50 GLORIOUS YEARS"

With this thread I invite "EVERYONE" to post screenshots of HJG DC8's in action within FS .... accompanied by your own personal text/tributes to these great aircraft and in celebration of this important aviation milestone.
I'll start the ball rolling with my own tribute and all whom wish to participate are welcome to following my lead.
Remember .... it's DC8 imagery and tributes only .... all aircraft versions and liveries.
