Is there any way to make the autopilot follow the course that was plotted in the flight planner? For example for the DC-8 you switch the autopilot to EXT NAV, what do you do for the 707 since I am not familiar with it.

Sorry, I didn't integrate the autopilot with the FS flight planner. If you want waypoint navigation you'll need to use the INS system.

OR .... just plain old back to basics paper charts and VOR to VOR navigation.
Certainly in the case of those pre-1965 panels which aren't INS equipped.

Actually you can in FS9 and probably in FSX too. In my 720 in FS9, I modified the panel.cfg file by adding the GPS standard gauge as follows:
Open the panel.cfg file and at the end of the [window01] section, add: gauge35=737-400!Nav GPS Switch, 7,480, 17. In my case I use the #35 because the previous gauge # was 34. Close. Load the FS plan you want, activate the GPS function by clicking on the icon in the panel (which will appear on the left) and then set the AP to LOC/VOR. And that's it.
