I AGREE ENTIRELY !
Personally .... I have an intense hatred for AUTO-INSTALLERS.
I don't even like unzipping files and having them (supposedly) automatically go to their relevent FS folder locations. I've seen (though not experienced myself) to many problems in the past.
Always .... I unzip "EVERYTHING" to a temporary folder first, then manually transfer the contents of each folder to where it all should go.
It seems to save a lot of frustration .... for me at least.
Glad you got it sorted "YAREK".
Thanks also John for your heads-up regarding the VISTA OS. I know there are a few issues there which you might like to discuss more fully later on.

I wonder if a significant number of FS users are deterred from using HJG aircraft by the need to manually edit aircraft.cfg files in order to mate base packs to texture sets...

every time I get auto installer downloads I always put them in a tempory folder as in the past it has overwritten gauge files that have caused other aircraft not to work properly

I wonder if a significant number of FS users are deterred from using HJG aircraft by the need to manually edit aircraft.cfg files in order to mate base packs to texture sets... That may be a possibility, though I don't see any reason to substantiate changing current procedure. Many, if not most, sim enthusiasts get their start by downloading repaints for stock FS9 aircraft. Creating separate packs for each individual paint or groups of paints is just impractical. Besides by having the download section set up the way it is it provides everyone with the flexibility to create their own custom library of HJG aircraft, not to mention the flexibility of mixing and matching other soundpacks and panels to suit their needs. markAutoinstaler is VERY BAD idea!!! yeah... I spent half night check everything. And everything was OK. DC-8-63 began work after I restarted computer. I don't think so it is HJG mistake, propably system has (had?) error. I'm not newbe and I know how to install model/panel/texture/sound - fortunately

I remember you raised this one privately just recently George. And my response now is the same as it was then .... that there's "NO WAY IN THE WORLD" we're going to suddenly convert literally hundreds of files to AUTO-INSTALL routines. Both Hell will freeze over and I'll have been long dead before that ever happens ;D Whilst I appreciate there are many folk out there who harbour preference (if not complete reliance) for AUTO-INSTALL routines, by far the vast majority of folk with whom I associate and have been deeply involved with FS over many years past, all unanimously prefer manual installations .... and being in total control of precisely where those files end up getting put. I've witnessed (though not suffered myself) too many instances of AUTO-INSTALLERS screwng-up installations, and even occasions where reliance upon Windows to allocate files automatically has ended up going wrong too .... for whatever reason If anyone gets stuck with our prescribed installation routine .... then we do try to help them out as best we can In running a quality oriented FS website this's part of the service we do try to provide here "YAREK" .... it pays to be aware that some (though very few I should think) FS installations require your PC to be shutdown/restarted before files appear. Most certainly FS must be shutdown/restarted for any changes/add-ons to even begin to take effect/be recognized .... at the very least ;D Mark C AKL/NZ

I used an auto installer once for a Beverly then had to go through FS and delete the bits where they had been put.
I had files literally dumped at random
As others have said the best thing to do when auto installing is to do it to a temp folder and the manually install and edit.
Recently updated my BAC One-Eleven using the auto installer straight in as I believed it would only put a updated model and VC in.
I thought it was only the model that was updated and did not realise it was a new config as well and the result was it wiped the 112...yes one hundred and twelve repaints I had done form my One-Eleven files.
That's what happens when you're tired........manual load and that can't happen.
So I had to re install all of them
Personally I think the auto installer is the worst invention for FS.

I also don't trust auto-installs. I've seen cases where there were typos in folder names, and files in the wrong folders.
I'm in software (not on PCs though) and I know from experience how easy it is to mess up the automation of something, even when you have the best intentions.
HJG jets are worth the effort of figuring out how to do all this manually!

Jim

I've never heard that . It was first time when I had to restart computer to make work installation, and I'm pretty sure it was system error not HJG.

As I said .... that particular case highlited is "RARE" .... but .... I have none-the-less witnessed cases of it.
It just pays to be aware of these things.

I woud like to contribute my two cents worth. Alaways dot your "I"s and cross your "T"s when you add textures. Many great texture files have a very and I stress very slight discrepency which would potentially wipe out the remaining model fleet in any Freeware Aircraft. For example here is a file to compare:
[fltsim.0] ============== Always check for double digit error if file is new addition or less than 10 texture files. title=HJG Douglas DC-8-63F Aeromexico 1973 === "I first words are reversed, File will not show" sim=DC-8-63F_2k4 ==" Typically the "_" or "-" may be missing or a typo; ensure it is correct. panel= sound= texture=aeromexico_1973_63f_n4856t ==== Again same principle applies for sim line above kb_checklists=== Dont worry about these lines if troubleshooting missing texture and/or fleet kb_reference=== Ditto same as the sentence above^ visual_damage=1 description=HJG Douglas DC-8-63F== Check for reversed/missing letters and words if this is your second and/ or any additional texture. Occasionally partial file shows in your FS9 aircraft file. You may find sound and air/model files scattered in FS9 file. ui_manufacturer=Douglas ==== This line has gave me fits. Ensure it matches exactly. ui_type=DC-8-63F===== If the" F " is missing usually cargo door will not open. ui_variation=Aeromexico (1973) atc_id=N4856T ====== If this is missing reg # you may not have call sign. atc_airline=AEROMEXICO=== If this is missing you will have phonetic call sign ! atc_flight_number=863==== if Missing may interfere with call sign. atc_heavy=0 atc_parking_codes=AMX atc_parking_types=CARGO,GATE,RAMP
[fltsim.1] title=HJG Douglas DC-8-63F Airborne Express 2003 sim=DC-8-63F_2k4 model= panel= sound= texture=airborne_express_2003_63f_n811ax kb_checklists= kb_reference= visual_damage=1 description=HJG Douglas DC-8-63F ui_manufacturer=Douglas ui_type=DC-8-63F ui_variation=Airborne Express (2003) atc_id=N811AX atc_airline=AIRBORNE atc_flight_number=863 atc_heavy=0 atc_parking_codes=ABX atc_parking_types=CARGO,GATE,RAMP
lastly HJC files seem to have the least problems of any Freeware Aircraft. Vistaliners and tinmouse/Posky all seem to have a lot more of the common errors above. In fact once you figure out how HJC files work you will be able to save a lot and I stress A LOT OF TIME.

See how easy it is to make a typo! LOL I often key in HJC instead of HJG! I think that is because of the common sounding letters or maybe I am dyslexic! LOL b c d e g p t v z. solving customer service billing issues are frequently encountered with names which contain the dreaded multiple letters here: b c d e g p t v z You never know it just may save a life if you are a dispatcher. It will certainly prevent a lot of credit billing problems! Heck my last name is so often mispelled over the phone I always spell it with phonetic alphabet. I do not recommend always using the exact phonetic alphabet. IF Your reservation Agent it is a female: C = Cat D =Dog if it is a guy then C= Charlie D = Delta. Try it if you are not already doing it!
