Peter LIDDELL is kindly upgrading each of our current HJG EASTERN AIR LINES B720 and DC8 liveries for us
These upgrades will result in improvements and corrections .... as well as additional variations of EASTERN period liveries for these aircraft which, to date, we/HJG, have not previously represented/offerred.
Here's what Peter has kindly done for us ....
EASTERN AIRLINES "Golden Falcon" DC8-20 liveries ....
EASTERN AIR LINES DC8-21 N8601 (1959) with full "FLY EASTERN'S GOLDEN FALCON JET" ledgend and original "DC-8B" titles and single flag
This particular subject features the airlines full "FLY EASTERN's GOLDEN FALCON JET" ledgend .... with additional rare "DC-8B" titles.
There was more than 1 variation of this classic/historic EASTERN ledgend .... and this first one is different from all of the other variations which followed.
BUT FIRST .... here's a few historical notes about the early EASTERN Golden Falcon liveries ....
UNITED AIR LINES and DELTA AIR LINES were the first US operators to commence DC8 operations .... each operating DC8-10's aircraft .... and later types too !
Initial DOUGLAS AIRCRAFT CORPORATION marketing of the DC8 referred to these aircraft as "DC8-A's" and "B's", but, these designations were eventually dropped in favor of the numerical series/type names which then became standard DOUGLAS nomenclature.
The DC8-20 represented a more powerful version of the original domestic DC8-10 model and was intended for hot and high type operations .... with the succeeding DC8-30 then representing advances over both the DC8-10 and -20.
When the DC8-20 aircraft first entered service with EASTERN, the airline branded these aircraft DC8-B's .... hence the "DC-8B" titles which appeared on the rear fuselage.
Airline/Jet War "one-up-manship" then saw both NATIONAL AIRLINES, NORTHWEST AIRLINES, and PAN AMERICAN WORLD AIRWAYS market their DC8-30's as "DC8-C's".
During 1960 both DELTA AIR LINES and UNITED AIR LINES protested, to the CAB, on the grounds of perceived unfair advantage for EASTERN, PAN AMERICAN, NATIONAL, and NORTHWEST by their use of such "unofficial" aircraft designations .... and on the grounds that "no such DC8 models existed". After DOUGLAS refused to formalize A, B, and C designations for it's DC8's, EASTERN, and its counterpart airlines, were all forced to drop their "DC-8B" and "C" branding/marketing, from February 1961, and then standardize by using official DOUGLAS aircraft type nomenclature for their DC8's.
Other variations of classic/historic EASTERN AIR LINES "Golden Falcon" DC8-20 liveries ....
EASTERN AIR LINES DC8-21 N8602 (1960) with full "FLY EASTERN'S GOLDEN FALCON JET" ledgend and double flag (delivery scheme)
EASTERN AIR LINES DC8-21 N8607 (1962) with shortened "FLY EASTERN AIRLINES" ledgend and double flag and white tail
EASTERN AIR LINES DC8-21 N8615 (1962) with shortened "FLY EASTERN AIRLINES" ledgend and single flag and striped tail
A number of revised half variations of EAL's classic "GOLDEN FALCON" livery were also supported by the airlines DC8 fleet during the mid 1960's .... featuring heavily modified fuselage stripping with variations in both titles and tailfin logo colours ....
DC8-21 N8604 - Half Golden Falcon Fuselage Stripe - Full Version - 1964
DC8-21 N8613 - Half Golden Falcon Fuselage Stripe - With Reversed Colours Tailfin Logo - 1965
DC8-21 N8608 - Half Golden Falcon Fuselage Stripe - With Simplified Fuselage Titles - 1965
At least 1 EAL DC8-21 supported the following rare experimental livery during 1964 (the same tailfin livery is known to have been applied to 2 B747-100's leased from PAN AMERICAN WORLD AIRWAYS during the very early 1970's) .... prior to the introduction of the airlines classic 2-tone blue striped "HOCKEY STICK" livery ....
DC8-21 N8610 - Experimental Livery - 1965
EASTERN AIR LINES classic "Hockey Stick" DC8-20 liveries ....
EASTERN AIR LINES DC8-21 N8606 (1966) Hockey Stick livery with "EASTERN" titles on the tailfin
EASTERN AIR LINES DC8-21 N8609 (1968) Hockey Stick livery
Some EAL DC8-21's which supported the airlines classic late 1960's introduced 2-tone blue striped "HOCKEY STICK" livery by also supported the US flag on their fuselage crownskins .... whilst other aircraft did not ....
DC8-21 N8612 - Final Livery With US Flag - 1969
EASTERN AIR LINES classic DC8-50 "HOCKEY STICK" liveries ....
EASTERN AIR LINES DC8-51 N8781R (1969) Hockey Stick livery
EASTERN AIR LINES DC8-51 N8779R (1970) Hockey Stick liverywith flag
I'll update this posting with each of Peter's new and upgraded EASTERN liveries .... as and when each these becomes available in the future.
In the meantime .... "MANY THANKS" for these Peter, and for your efforts to improve and better represent this classic/historic flightline for us too .... because it's "VERY MUCH APPRECIATED INDEED".
