Something unusual when using the GPS nav feature is happening. I usually do not use the GPS feature, but because of the great distance and time required for this flight I elected to use the GPS feature. A flightdeck screen shot is shown to illustrate this. My GPS\IFR flight plan was entered as Los Angeles to Mexico City. As you can see on the GPS instrumentation I am on track, however, the DG and magnetic compass are showing a heading of 358 deg. A look at the map also showed me to be on course. In fact my course should be in a south easterly direction, more like 150 deg. I have absolutely no idea what is causing this abnomality Any ideas would be welcome. Cheers; Herman

Probably because we didn't have GPS back then !!

;D ;D of course, you are absolutely right.
However, I do believe that all HJG DC-8's are set up to function with GPS, and it still does not explain why it is affecting the DG's and magnetic compass in such an unusual way.

Well, I really can't answer your question properly. Maybe you've got too much metal in the cargo pit !! ;D

When you say GPS .... then I presume you're referring to the KLN90B.
I've never heard of this (or any previous report of the KLN90B GPS interfereing with other NAV instrumentation) before now .... BUT THEN AGAIN .... I've never flown the DC8's (or anything else for that matter) using GPS NAV anyway .... preferring, instead, to use VOR to VOR NAV .... and just plain good old "DEAD RECKONING".
"IF" there is any discrepency there then that would "surprise me" .... only because HJG have never done any work on that particular feature (the KLN90B GPS) of these panels (so far as I'm aware) .... either in respect of the gauge itself or any related CFG data.

OK, thank you for your replies, and I'll check the cargo hold Skyking ;D ;D. This morning I did some additional research into this problem. I loaded another HJG DC-8-50 and filed a flight plan, IFR using first VOR navigation, and then GPS navigation. After the flight loaded and displayed, the same error occurred, the heading on the DG was way off. The flight plan was New York to Milwaukee and FS nav log showed a heading of around 160 deg. when it should have been about 270-280 degs. So I decided to shut down FS and try a restart with the same information and this time everything came up correctly ie. flight plan headings and DG headings. So it looks like it is an intermittent problem, but it is a recent problem. I have been adding quite a bit of additional aircraft and scenery to FS9 lately, so this may be responsible for the occasional faults Herman

Thanks for your "HONEST" feedback Herman .... it does help to know what you've commented As I mentioned yesterday .... yours is the very first such report since these simulations were last worked on .... around 2007 (the 2010 update only added INS to some DC8 panels only). I don't intend to take the easy route and say that what you report .... in regard to pssible conflicts on your PC .... is, indeed, the cause of your experience, but, it "IS" always a "POSSIBILITY" .... given that your experience is a previously unknown/unreported one. Experience and comments both "NOtED" though in any case. Mark C AKL/NZ

Herman .... the following thought just crossed my mind.
"IF" this turns out to be a repetiticious intermittent issue .... then can you be sure to try loading the default MSFS CESSNA (or other default MSFS aircraft type) .... in advance of selecting your DC8 aircraft/panel of choice .... just to see "IF" such an action also helps cure the problem.
Going directly to ones add-on aircraft of choice at the very start of any FS session "CAN" .... sometimes (on some systems) .... result in stuck instruments and other issues that don't/shouldn't otherwise occur.

Ok, thank you Mark for your input and suggestions.
I will follow your advice should this issue come up again.

Herman, Every time this has happened to me, it was scenery related. You said you had installed some scenery lately, my advice would be to go to your scenery library and 'turn off' any new scenery. Then take your flight using GPS. If the headings are back to normal, go back to the scenery library and turn them back 'on' one by one and try a flight between each one. When you get to the one causing the problem, you'll know. Cheers, Bob
