A little story about the FTL/CPA DC-8-63 hybrid ....
Between 1968 and 1972 CPA took delivery of 5 DC-8-63's .... CF-CPL, -CPO, -CPP, -CPQ, and -CPS.
CF-CPQ ("Empress Of Lima" .... Fleet # 803), C/N # 45928, L/N # 334, was delivered to the airline on February 24 1968. It was leased to FLYING TIGER LINE (N625FT) from July 2nd 1968 until December 30th 1968 (this aircraft was not fitted with the strengthened floor or the port side forward fuselage main deck cargo door of DC-8-63/F aircraft. It was likely used by FTL as a parcel type freighter .... if not for supplementary military charter work .... if not for both sorts of operations during the Vietnam War era. For the duration of its FTL lease this aircraft supported the CPA fuselage striping with "FLYING TIGER LINE" titles and FTL's standard tail livery of this particular period. Upon its return to CPA this aircraft resumed it original identity (CF-CPQ, Fleet # 803), but was renamed "Empress Of Hong Kong" .... then renamed "Empress of Ontario during 1974. It remained in service with CPA until 1983. It was sold to WORLDWAYS CANADA (CF-CPQ) on March 1st 1983. Then sold to AEROLEASE FINANCIAL GROUP (N780AL) on December 28th 1990 .... and leased to AIRBORNE EXPRESS .... then re-registered "N817AX". It was then sold to AIRBORNE EXPRESS on March 30th 1992 .... and finally withdrawn from service and stored at Wilmington, Ohio, USA, during June 2002 then scrapped later that same year.
