Greetings. Not sure if this is the proper forum to discuss this, but considering that I am far more likely to encounter users of older flight sims here, I might have a better chance of getting a good answer over here.
After having a long hiatus (which will continue until sometime next year), I plan to get back to simming with FSX Steam (my current computer does not have enough RAM for more modern MSFS versions, but also because I want that previous nostalgia that I had until my old laptop went out; I am planning to upgrade the old laptop with bigger RAM and storage at some point later). my current best bet is to configure a 4TB external SSD to boot FSX-Steam from, given the following factors:
1) My current laptop is powerful enough to run FSX-Steam. Specifications below.
2) In relation to #1, the same laptop is used for other kinds of work related use, so my laptop will invariably have insufficient space (I will not just be downloading an entire bulk of aircraft add-ons, including those supplied from here, I will be loading LOTS of scenery files into the sim, and will also be allocating some space to craft my own add-ons and other experiments).
3) Some report I read about Steam no longer supporting Windows 7 and the possibility of FSX-SE not being supported (I cannot confirm this, but found this in CBFS forum)

...thus forcing me to use FSX-Steam in Win 10 if this is true.
Device model: ASUS ZenBook 14
Device name: LAPTOP-T44VNCBH
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1065G7 CPU @ 1.30GHz 1.50GHz
RAM: 8.00GB
Device ID: BC6E630F-1143-4842-90D0-353009CB2A19
System type: 64-bit operating system, x64 processor
Windows 10 Version: 22H2
Thus, if anyone here uses an external drive to run FSX (maybe FS2004 also), then any input will be nice about installing the sim in an external drive. By the way, my laptop does not allow swapping of its hardware so I have to use an external drive.
Thanks in advance. Since my hiatus will take another year, I will only be setting up my add-ons for the time being, and installing them to the simulator one-by-one, when I find the most convenient time to purchase FSX Steam (and likely, a 4TB SSD when I find one online that is of decent quality; so many ads about SSDs I have found, but have yet to research on which ones are not low-quality).
