Most probably know the story about the 1972 accident in the Cordillera De Los Andes .... FUERZA AEREA URUGUAYAS 571 .... a charter flight from Montevideo to Santiago with a college old boys rugby team (and their families and friends) intending to play a series of matches in Chile. Due to an en-route navigational error crossing the Andes they never got there. Following the crash. The survivors were stuck in the Andes for almost 3 months and eventually forced to consume bodies of their dead friends and relatives in order to remain alive .... until 2 of the fittest survivors managed to walk out of the peaks to raise support for their stranded comrades. It's probably one of, if not "THE", greatest stories of human survival ever. At least 3 movies have been made about this event .... as follows .... 1. "SURVIVE" .... a (particularly poor) Mexican production from the mid 1970's. 2. "ALIVE" .... a superb Canadian production from the early 1990's (and hitherto the best retelling of this story). A couple of trailers/clips as follows .... www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rr1xiAeBeigwww.youtube.com/watch?v=Wd1ZGO6Qiu8 For those interested an entirely new version of the same story has recently been produced and which is entitled "SOCIETY OF THE SNOW". It appeared on NETFLIX (here/in NZ) yesterday. A Spanish production .... of some 2.5 hours duration .... "subtitled in English". Saw it last night. One correction to my earlier presentation in regard to language .... what I saw (for my region at least) was "IN ENGLISH" (not Spanish and not subtitled either). My honest impressions of it .... 1. It's .... OK .... but is not entirely historically correct. 2. "ALIVE" (the early 1990's film production .... previews linked above) is "far more historically correct" in accordance with the books "ALIVE" by Piers Paul REID (commissioned by survivors of this event during the 1970's) and more recently "MIRACLE OF THE ANDES" by Fernando PARADO (an actual survivor) .... I understand Roberto CANESSA (another survivor) may have penned a book too but haven't yet acquired/read it. 3. "ALIVE" (the 1990's movie) is better scripted also. 4. Both the 1990's "ALIVE" and recent "SOCIETY OF THE SNOW" movies have their strengths and weaknesses, but, IMHO "ALIVE" still remains the better of the 2 productions. 5. "SOCIETY OF THE SMOW" is still worth "a comparative look". A couple of very good documentary presentation about "the actual event/s" .... Alive: "20 Years Later" (Documentary) .... released at the same time as its movie name-sake and featuring interviews with Fernando PARADO and other survivors whilst also relating to the movie production too www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjgNnTNLEscThe Extraordinary Story Of Andes Plane Crash Survivor 1972 (Documentary) .... a later production by t "THE HISTOR CHANNEL" and largely presented by Nando PARADO www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIGepBHFe5MQuite a fascinating and inspirational story/recollection.
