Lima Tango passes Mount Fuji at a respectable distance on the approach to the old Tokyo Haneda airport. Ian

I'm glad to know you observe that "respectable distance" thing. Remember that traditional Japanese proverb .... "when the sky is blue FUJI is angry" .... Wouldn't like history to repeat itself Mark C AKL/NZ

Here's a bit of trivia for you:
Movie producers Cubby Broccoli and Harry Salzman were in Japan scouting locations for their next James Bond movie, 'You Only Live Twice'. For some reason they decided to stay longer than planned, and so they missed their scheduled flight home, to London via Hong Kong - the date was March 5, 1966, and the flight was the ill-fated BOAC 707 (a 420 I believe) which crashed near Mt. Fuji.
Had Broccoli and Salzman flown home as planned, that probably would have meant the end of the James Bond movie franchise.
Regards,
Jim

Yes, you are correct about the aircraft and date, Jim. It was a tragic accident. G-APFE was flying from Haneda to Hong Kong and as the weather was so beautifully clear, the Captain got permission to fly close to the mountain for sightseeing. Unfortunately there was extreme CAT/windshear and the airframe succumbed to the extreme forces involved and the aircraft broke up in midair. A while back, I read the accident report ([ftp]http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19660305-1&lang=en[/ftp]) and, as Garry Russell's repaint of FE is available on HJG, I decided to recreate her last flight as near as I could. This is a shot of FE at roughly the point where she hit the turbulence. Although before my time with the airline, there were still people flying who had been close to crew members on that flight. Ian

Equally tragic was that on the previous evening .... "MARCH 4TH 1966" .... a CANADIAN PACIFIC AIRLINES DC8-43 (CF-CPK) pranged on approach to landing at Tokyo, Haneda with a loss of 64 lives.
I've a couple pictures here of G-APFE (the BOAC B707-420 lost in the vicinity of FUJI on March 5th 1966) taxiing past the DC8 wreckage .... only minutes before her own demise.
