Apparently QANTAS flight crews of that era conjured up a number of other more profane meanings too for that "V" ;D Historically there's always been a lot of casual/friendly rivalry between Australian's and their British ancestors .... in as much as similar rivalry still exists today between Aussie's and us Kiwi's too ! One of the things early QANTAS B707 crews liked to rub-in upon BOAC ("Boys Own Aero Club" as the Australian's used to refer to it) COMET crews concerned the performance of their aircraft. The BOAC COMET 4 would typically take-off from Calcutta bound for Karachi, followed by the QANTAS B707 around 30 minutes later. The B707 would then usually pass the COMET around halfway across India .... at which point QANTAS crews would occasionally call up their BOAC counterparts to ask how they were getting along down there in their "MINI-JET" .... some 8000FT below. QANTAS crews would invariably be relaxing at their hotel enjoying refreshments by the time the BOAC crew walked .... not to mention the associated gentle ribbing that would then take place ;D Guess those were the days Mark C AKL/NZ
