All the way from Havana, Cuba .... well Mexico City, Mexico really ! We have pleasure presenting the following latest product by our texture mastercraftsman Eduardo ROCHA .... the much anticipated CUBANA DC8-43. CUBANA DE AVIACION DC8-43 (1977) CU-T1210Based at Havana, Cuba, at least 3 DC8-40's were operated by CUBANA DE AVIACION during the late 1970's .... CU-T1200, CU-T1201, and CU-T1210. CU-T1200 was severely damged as the result of a mid-air collision with a company AN24 near Havana on March 18th 1976. The aircraft lost some 16ft of wing but landed safely at Havana without any fatalities. This aircraft was later deemed beyond economic repair and written-off. CU-T1201 was destroyed by an onboard bomb explosion on June 10th 1976. The aircraft crashed into the sea near Babados with the loss of all POB. CU-T1210 (the subject of Eduardo's latest repaint) was leased from AIR CANADA (ex CF-TJJ) during 1977 .... to cover for both the aircraft damaged and the one lost. We'll get this file up for you all ASAP .... sorry it's just missed todays update by literally the skin of one's teeth Muchismas gracias Eduardo para esta avion muy bonita y famosa ! Mark C AKL/NZ

Hi It seems that those DC-8's were leased from Air Canada with the support of the Canadian Government. The embargo is only from the USA business to Cuba, although foreign companies that trade with Cuba might be barred from trading with the USA. That is what I gathered from Wikipedia. If anyone knows better, please correct me. ATB

Air Canada would account for them being series 40's
There would have been a limted number of possibilities for the source of that marque

A interesting detail .... possibly not so commonly known about CUBANA.
During the mid to late 1950's the airline actually excercised favor toward the B707-120 .... which resulted in 2 aircraft (-139's) being ordered.
Due to Cuba's souring diplomatic relations with the US and it's allegeance toward another great super power from the north, which also culminated in other international events of the period, their 2 B707-120's were eventually delivered to WESTERN AIRLINES, which then saw CUBANA equip itself with predominantly Soviet civil aircraft types.

Just to complement your story Mark. Due to those international events and the fear of their aircraft been impounded by the States that drive Cubana to purchase aircraft from the former Soviet Union, which is still the case today due to the aforementioned Embargo. In fact, as of 2005, Cubana has the policy of leasing western aircraft, mainly from Europe, as and when needed, reserving their purchases to the TU-204 and IL-96-300 at favorable costs and maintenance parts in more favourable terms.
