MEGA 1960's era Northwest Orient project underway!

Presenting the lead ship of Northwest's older scheme series I've been cooking up. The big NORTHWEST lettering on the side took around 8 hours to get done and well worth it.

This will focus on three timeframes:

-1963 delivery scheme on the 720B {with white outlined US flag on tail, appears only the 720B had these not the 707s}, 707-320B/SCD and C featuring unique "Intercontinental Boeing 320C" and stylized "Orient" in written script on the fuselage logoing, door shadow outlines and red "boomerang" stripe 'bent' over the nose.

-1965 scheme for all which is pretty much the same as the 1968 era with the "Red compass widget" on the nose replacing the earlier "Red boomerang", new "Fan Jet" logo and block lettering above it, the "320C" becoming just "320" in the back and finally the thin charcoal grey door outlines.

-1968 scheme as seen here with blue and white door outlines being pretty much the only upgrade over the 1965 era scheme. {oops, have to get the hat-rack door finished right on this one..some white left over from the 70's era template I've modified}

Here we have the left side pretty much finished, right side is next.

Here's a few snippets of how she's at right now. Both sides are now done, with the new right side detail being shown, I added some cargo detail of course.

{FWIW..Still looking for a late 60s era NW logo seen at airports with the NW 707 tail in a circle..I could swear I saw those on the various Northwest ground handling equipment and baggage/cargo pallets at the Minneapolis airport when I was a kid. IF anyone has a link to this rather RARE Northwest logo, let me know. I'd really appreciate it!!!}

I'm just wondering if the Red "Compass Widget" is a bit too large up front? What does everyone think? I'm wondering "if it needs a trim..it's just where to trim it..that's the question..?" ;D Hehehehe.

Right side front, made some new Pratt and Whitney logos for the engines on both sides..let them be really shiny in the PSD as well, no dirt on them at all..NW made a big effort to buff and polish the bare metal on the fuselage and engines of their fleet during this period of time:



Cargo detail, also sharpened and refined the "FAN JET" logo a bit more in this shot too:

A little shakedown-flight test from KMSP-KGFK {Grand Forks ND} getting to know this real sweetie..Can't wait to do the other variants of this scheme. This old NWOA scheme is quite classic and very eye appealing.. ;D

As usual, excellent paints.
Your question regarding the red "widget". I'm kinda on the fence here. Maybe its the angle, but my recollection, and every photo I've seen is that the "widget" is a little narrower (ie. not as tall). The bottom slants down at slightly less of an angle. We're really splitting hairs here (and I have so few left to split). It seems as though you are really, really close. I would think only a "Northwest Knucklehead" like myself would even notice.

Now, its time to get them released!!!

Per the observations with the nose "Compass thingy" and studying the pictures I have..I think I have her close now.

Here we are about to get a run from KMSP to KCLE on a rather dreary looking August afternoon. {Looks like Southern Taiwan for the past two and a half weeks too. We've been hit by two tropical storms and a category 4 typhoon over the past few weeks. }




If the stripes up front look okay, I'll "go gold" with it and start slapping this onto the other schemes for the 67 era and 65 era birdies. Then I get to work out a "boomerang" for the 63 era nose up front. Found some really good resources helping out on this so it's going to be a big package coming soon.

BTW..thanks QXductape for that rare Northwest 707 logo! I need to work with that a bit and see if I can get her built into a logo for my baggage bins. I have two scans of a F/A bag on Ebay that has this logo on it but it's all crumpled up and not-usable. This one you sent can be worked with. Many thanks!!

You Guys are Very Welcome.....Gald I was able to help in a small way. Little I could do in exchange for such a great work of art.
I almost had forgot about that logo. When I worked for "Herman"/ North Central 68-73 that logo was on a lot of interchange bag tags & stuff destined to KIWD. But it was funny that logo actually was on stuff coming more from KDTW than KMSP, as it seemed they had more older style tags. I think though that had more to do with the Western NWO stations not always getting the latest & greatest Co. literature.

A few more painted up tonight while battling a nasty bout of sinusitis.

Presenting 707-351B-SCD N352US as she appeared in 1965 just before NW removed the "Intercontinental Boeing 320B" logos off the rear fuselage and changeover of the delivery "Boomerang" on the nose to the "Compass Widget" seen later. A bit of a "hybrid scheme" if you will.

Northwest later stripped this off their B-SCD models, the C's from the 1963 era had the same only with "320C" vice "320B". They later modified this to just "320" on all their C's from around 1965-66 onwards. {Must have been fun working in their paint shop at this time. ;D}

Head-on view of the "Boomerang" on the nose:



They modified this later on into the "Compass Widget", simplifying the radome paint 707/720B fleet-wide from this to just BAC grey and black.

And thanks to QXDuctape, the NW logos for this period on the LD-3 containers



{I could bet it would be "fun" trying to cram one of these into that little side compartment..LOL! The 320B-SCD only could handle non-palletized 'loose cargo' on the left side but we'll let that slide here..I love the cargo details on this model and it's too good looking to let a chance to detail it pass by {Hee Hee}..;D }

With this scheme, the door outlines are in charcoal grey, new "Boomerang" stripe over the nose, new cargo LD-3 detail {this is already moved over to the previous N368US, I'll use the earlier era logo for the LD-3 seen on the 1963 era N365US I'm getting ready to do.}

I have another model coming up for preview in just a few minutes here..

One more from this '65 era, this time the C with the grey door outlines seen on N382US..only it's 1968. Northwest's paintshop trying to keep up with all the marketing changes for the airline.

Now I can move into a passenger B model I've found from '68 era. Then a quickie 351B-SCD from the 68 era, then into the 1963 Delivery scheme -without- door outlines on the 351B-SCD and 351C, Then we get into the 720B's covering the 63 Delivery, '65 and final '68 era colors. {I'm looking forward to the earliest schemes.} Then the Northwest Orient 60's collection will be complete. ;D
