With the help of my good friend and HJG colleague Camilo LUENGAS, I couldn't resist knocking up a pictorial tribute to the last production DC-8.
The 556th and last ever DC-8 to roll off the McDonnell-Douglas production line at Long Beach California was a standard DC-8-63 for SCANDINAVIAN AIRLINES SYSTEM.
This particular aircraft (C/n 46163, L/n #556) became SE-DBL, "Tord Viking". It first flew on April 4 1972 and was delivered to the airline on May 12 1972.
Between 1982 and 1988 SE-DBL was also operated by SAS charter subsidiary SCANAIR. In service with SCANAIR this aircraft first featured a hybrid livery comprised of "SCANDINAVIAN" fuselage engine titles, standard SAS fuselage cheatline, "SAS" engine titles, and SCANAIR tail logo with "SUNJET" titles.
SE-DBL also later appeared in mid 1980's SCANAIR livery .... and
renamed "Bodil Viking".
The aircraft was later sold converted to a freighter during August 1989 then operated EMERY AIRFREIGHT (N797AL) until May 30 2000 when it was finally retired from service.
Today this aircraft is owned by International Air Response and remains in storage at Victorville California.
The EMERY AIRFREIGHT livery is already currently available in the HJG "DC-8-63F" downloads inventory.
The definitive SAS and SCANAIR livery versions are also available "here" too .... but .... what we currently have all relates to other less significant aircraft.
What makes these repaints so special is that each one relates exclusively to the "LAST EVER" DC-8 to be produced by McDonnell-Douglas Corporation".
Muchismas gracias Camilo por toda ayudar con eso proyecto especial !
For those interested. I've just posted "PART 2" of our DC-8 history on the "AIRCRAFT HISTORIES" page of this forum. This article follows on from the "Baby Eights" history and focuses exclusively on the "DC-8 SUPER 60 SERIES". DC-8-70 will form yet another future article.
