For those who may not have seen the news ATA Airlines (American Trans Air) ceased operations on April 3, 2008. They listed skyrocketing fuel costs and the loss of a vital military charter contract as the causes. The military charters accounted for roughly 70% of ATA's flights and helped cover the losses from their scheduled service. They were unable to secure an alternate source of funding and had no choice but to close down. Farewell, ATA. Gone, but not forgotten.

Sad news indeed ! ATA used to pass through NZAA quite regularly each summer with L1011 aircraft .... on the New Zealand sector of around the world tourist charters. Something else less to look forward to photographing now .... unfortunately ! Mark C AKL/NZ
