He paid $250,000 for the Convair and $899,702.60 for the Lockheed Jetstar? Seems to me those prices should be the other way around! Even after the refurbishing the Convair had only cost him $600,000....

Elvis bought DELTA's N8809E (c/n 38) which was then reregistered N880EP and named "Lisa Marie" (named for his daughter). This aircraft was also affectionately known as "Hound Dog One". At the time Elvis bought this CV880 both TWA and DELTA were taking these aircraft out of their fleets. The first oil price shock was biting hard .... and the CV880's, with their limited capacity (5 abreast seating for less than 100 PAX), were becoming too expensive to operate when compared to DC8 economics in DELTA's case .... and B707/720 economics in TWA's case. By the early 1970's CV880's weren't worth a lot .... because no major airline wanted them ! Hence they could be .... and often were .... purchased at dirt-cheap prices by the likes of travel clubs (such as INDY AIR, AIR VIKING, and SUNFARI), and the airlines of developing nations (such as LANICA) whom couldn't realistically afford Boeing and Douglas jetliners .... but .... were in desperate need of jet equipment anyway. There was an attempt to convert and market surplus CV880-22's & 22M's to freighters, but, only a hand full of these "AIRLIFTER" aircraft ever actually entered service .... mostly operating cargo routes between Latin American and the USA .... but again .... the aircraft was too expensive to operate and its capacity too limited to compete realistically with the likes of B707 and DC8 freighters .... and by the late 1970's and very early 1980's noise regulations began to discriminate against these aircraft too. In his book "CONVAIR 880 & 990", Jon PROCTOR (whom I actually met during the early 1980's) states that Elvis paid $1 million dollars for N880EP .... then spent another $750 thousand on the aircrafts luxury interior. For those interested and whom don't already know .... we (HJG) do offer a texture for Elvis's N880EP by Tony MADGE. See our "CV880" downloads section Mark C AKL/NZ

....and the 'Hound Dog II' repaint for Elvis' Lockheed JetStar can be found on AVSIM as file hjg_lockheed_jetstar_hound_dog_ll.zip (requires the HJG Lockheed Jetstar, find that on flightsim.com as file hjgl1329.zip).
