Here you go Dan...
Let me start by saying I too have worked with FSX... and computer users... for many years as well and I'm aware of what causes most problems for people in this type of situation. This method works best for me, I find it less complicated. I'm not saying it's the definitive way, we all have preferences, it's just different.
Why less complicated? It is similar in some ways of course, but by not adding to the fsx.cfg file, creating extra folders, or having long pathways, this method cuts down on many potential errors as these are the things many users have trouble with. I recommend manually installing as this too reduces errors. Basically, it's like adding any 3erd party add-on... up-dating details listed below
Downloading the base aircraft and adding textures to them is quite basic and well covered else where so I'll only say that in the "aircraft.cfg" file under the first section, panel and sound=, make them blank after the "=".
EX:
[fltsim.0]
title=HJG B707-120 Pan Am 1958 N707PA
sim=B707-120
model=04
panel=
sound=
texture=pan_am_1958_121_n707p
PANEL: All core panel gauges into the main gauge folder, core panel sounds into the main sound folder. A/c specific panels into their respective A/C folder and labeling them juist "panel". To alias a panel, as with other add-ons... simply change the cfg in the panel folder to something like this:
[fltsim]
alias=HJG Boeing 707-120 v6\panel
SOUND: I add a particular sound folder to ONE A/C and label it just "sound". Then, like the panels, alias any other A/C by changing the sound.cfg to something like this:
[fltsim]
alias=HJG Boeing 720B v6\sound
There are no extra files laying around, only one copy of a any panel or sound. As for any concern about updates, each sound/panel cfg file tells me tells me where it's aliased if that needs changing. I also have a simple record of "which Aircraft which sound/panel".
This works for FSX, SP1, and SP2, and in both "XP SP1, 2, and 3" and "Vista Home Premium 64" not tested with acceleration or DX10.
This is my preference, I find it easier, if anyone else does too good, if not, no problem... it's not "the way", merely "a way"... personal preference takes precedence.
