DC8 72

After some further investigation into this problem, I found that by switching the DC-8-72 air file with that of the DC-8-62, the rudder and nose gear responded normal. This would tell us that the problem exists somewhere in the original DC-8-72 air file. Everything seems to be OK as far as the aircraft cfg. is concerned.

POSSIBLY ! All those SUPER 70 AIR.FILES were actually provided to us by John DETRICK .... whom I've not heard from in ages ! Does anyone know if the SUPER 71 and SUPER 73 are similarly affected too .... that's the NG and rudder animation ? I was hoping the fix might have been a simple CFG edit, but, maybe it's not ! Could be a while before we're able to get on top of this though (due to current commitments/priorities internally) .... assuming we're able to get on top of it at all ! Mark C AKL/NZ

The "air" file?!? Jeepers-creepers, that's surprising. Can't think of anything in that file controlling animations. On the other hand, I only have knowledge about FS9 and earlier air files. FSX air files are a mystery to me. ;D Dee

YEAH .... it's an "ODD ONE" alright Dee !
And it's even more odd that this issue is only being reported now .... some 2 years after the last DC8 FDE edit .... which only implicated engine related data for the last panel update !
I respect the informants observations though .... and .... both trust and respect Herman's input too !

George CARTY "might" have today fixed this problem for us .... but .... "STANDBY" for further announcement, from me, regarding this later on !

OK folks .... further to my above/last posting on this subject ! George has worked very hard comparing both the DC8-72 and DC8-62 AIR.FILE data. A minor anomaly/ommision was detected inside the DC8-72 AIR.FILE .... and we "thought" this might be the bug causing the lack of NG animation during ground steering .... BUT .... apparently not. So the mystery deepens ! We'll continue looking at this issue .... as and when is convenient for us to do so and around other priorities here. "IF" we identify and fix the snag .... then we'll announce so "HERE". In the meantime I've also, this afternoon, taken the liberty of checking each of the DC8-71, DC8-71F, DC8-73, DC8-72CF/F aircraft .... paying parricular close attention to their NG animations during ground steering. The NG animations of each of these DC8's was observed to work perfectly .... but .... no rudder deflection was observed at al on these aircraft and during ground checks. Other than this .... it appears only the DC8-72 and DC8-72F aircracft animations are affected by the "daid" insufficient NG animation during ground steering. ALL DC8 aircraft .... including both SUPER 72's as well .... otherwise turn faultlessly during ground steering. Mark C AKL/NZ

OK, you got me checking on all this because I seldom am taxiing while in the outside view except from behind, and here are my observations: DC-8-62: Nose whell moves while turning but only by using the Numpad Keys, NOT the Joystick. Aircraft turns okay with joystick, but no animation. I use the Numpad alot while taxiing to 'fine tune' the taxi, but use the joystick for major turns. I might add that the rudder is animated only while the nosewheel is. That is by using the Numpad keys. However, with the Autopilot in the Yaw Damper Position, the nosewheel does NOT move and the rudder seems to move in the opposite direction and while stopped, just moves back and forth. Turn the Autopilot to OFF and the rudder stops moving and goes back to the way I described before. On another note, I cannot seem to get the "A/P" Red flashing light to go out after turning off the autopilot without mouse clicking on the panel above the annunciator. DC-8-71: Nose wheel moves with both joystick and Numpad Keys, but rudder does not move with either, Yaw Damper on or off. DC-8-52 [UAL]: Same as the -62 except rudder moves in the proper direction. DC-8-50F [UAL]: Same as the -52. DC-8-61: Same as the -71. With Yaw Damper on, rudder acts 'strange' is all I can say. I also note that with the Numpad Keys, the rudder will deflect but the nosewheel won't turn while stopped. But.....you don't taxi these aircraft with the Yaw Damper on anyway. I might also add [IF it makes a difference] that I use the -61 Panel in all but the -71 Series. That's because our panels were all the same on the real ones basically. Don't know if the above helps or adds to the confusion !!

My experience .... as quoted earlier/above upon checking this .... is different from yours "SKYKING" only in respect of the fact that my DC8 NG's all turn/animate fine (except those of the DC8-72 and DC8-72CF/F .... actually they do turn but only very marginly and nothing like the extent to which all the other DC8 NG's all turn/animate) using the Joystick.

Folks .... we might be onto something here ! George and myself are currently conducting further NG and rudder animation tests with both DC8-72 and DC8-72CF/F. We'll let you know the outcome .... in due course ! Mark C AKL/NZ
